Link to tweet with background

"Today the Council of Europe will elect a new Commissioner for Human Rights. It’s an extremely influential body and the Commissioner wields huge influence in its 46 member countries (and yes, the UK is still a member of the CoE).

One of the 3 candidates is Michael O’Flaherty, a gay Irish former priest who was the principal drafter of the Yogyakarta Principles, which is “soft law” written by activists in 2006 that sought to establish the pseudoscientific “gender identity” in law (with varying levels of success).

The CoE is a human rights body that oversees the European Convention on Human Rights. The European Court of Human Rights upholds the Convention.

The CoE has been fully captured by transgender ideology. The election of O’Flaherty would mean the onslaught against sex realist campaigners will intensify. He is extremely dangerous. "

He's just been confirmed as elected.

"Congratulations to Michael O'Flaherty from Ireland, who has just been elected as the next Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights!

He succeeds Dunja Mijatović, and will serve a six year term as Commissioner."

Sorry, I don’t recognise your user name & I don’t click links unless I’m certain where they lead, so maybe you could just say?

Will this apply to the UK though?

The UK are members of the Council Of Europe - this isn't affected by Brexit.

Here's some exerts from Wikipedia if interested:

The Council of Europe

"is an international organisation with the goal of upholding human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe"

"As an international organisation, the Council of Europe cannot make laws,[8] but it does have the ability to push for the enforcement of select international agreements reached by member states on various topics.[9] The best-known body of the Council of Europe is the European Court of Human Rights, which functions on the basis of the European Convention on Human Rights of 1953."

Just when things were looking up with the news about Jo Phoenix along comes another threat in this wack-a-mole game that’s not a game.

Yep

Judging by the described mess of a very excitingly gender focused working team in court today, I'd think they'll be too busy supporting each other and making up rules and policing everything to get much done. Not to mention all the meetings and time away coping with feelings.

We can hope anyway.

Needmoresleep · 24/01/2024 23:12

The Council of Europe was always pretty irrelevant and is clearly making itself more so.

My experience was it provided British MPs and those from other countries to go on nice European jollies. A six year term with an inflated International institution salary. Nice work if you can get it, but no one is going to pay any heed to what you say.

PatatiPatatras · 26/01/2024 14:52

I see this going the way of the UN and the WHO. Initially respected but after a while of talking too much shit, they're ignored.

Helen Joyce has a few things to say about O’Flaherty in her book. She mentions his involvement in getting maximal Self ID legislation quietly passed in Ireland on the tails of the equal marriage referendum.
