OK here goes. The baby found in a carrier bag in a park story.
Recap an abandoned baby was found wrapped in a blanket/towel in a carrier bag in a London park by a dog walker. An update today said the baby was doing well in hospital. Police are appealing for the mother to come forwards.
Staff have named the baby Elsa.

My brain hurts on this so please go gentle if you disagree. It was very cold when the baby was found, like minus a few degrees, the baby could easly have frozen to death. They named the baby Elsa, the name of the main character from the movie Frozen. Does that seem inappropriate to you? My worry is that if that ends up being the baby's name for the rest of their life, that their name will always remind them of what happened to them for no fault of thier own. Am I overthinking this? It feels inappropriate to me.

I heard this story and I didn't think so. It's a beautiful name. Names all have a kind of history, a story of how they were chosen and why.

I don't think this will be the child's permanent name but if it were I think it honours what has happened tbh.

Elsa was also a lioness in the film 'Born Free'.

It's quite possible whoever gave the baby her temporary name doesn't know anything about either film, and the name choice was just random.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 19/01/2024 20:39

I have to say that the film wouldn't occur to me. She could just as easily be named after the woman who found her.

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 19/01/2024 20:41

I didn't know they'd called her that. But it wouldn't have occurred to me to link the two. Not a massive Frozen fan.

Seems a bit inappropriate now I think about it though..

That’s what I said to DH this morning over breakfast when I read the story. Read poor little mite.

lucky they didn’t call her ‘frosty’ I suppose.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 20/01/2024 15:25

When I heard they'd called her Elsa I automatically assumed it was a reference to Frozen. I do think it's in poor taste to be honest.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 20/01/2024 15:48

I would think it’s more ‘Elsa as in’ frozen than lion cub to be honest.

duckpancakes · 20/01/2024 16:14

They probably only decided the name once it was clear the baby had a chance

DewHopper · 20/01/2024 16:26

It's pretty shit tbh - really poor taste.

Agree with that. But I think it's unlikely that will be her name, isn't it?

ArabellaScott · 20/01/2024 19:41

-I hope she's okay and hope her mother's okay.

Crouton19 · 20/01/2024 19:50

This isn't her legal name, they need to call her something other than Baby Girl.

Horsedoglover59 · 20/01/2024 20:31

I think that Elsa is a lovely name, but I associate it with a friend of the family who was a lovely, gentle soul. Maybe you have to be a certain age group - which I am - to associate the name with Elsa the lioness.

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 20/01/2024 23:09

Look I'm not saying you're wrong but the vibe I got from it was more joyful/ empowering. Frozen is based on the old fairy tale of the snow queen and the lyric which played in my head was 'the cold never bothered me anyway' the baby is just a wee mite but survived something she may not have I felt the name was intended as a celebration of that.

Maybe I have poor taste / dodgy sense of dark humour but if so I think it's the same sort of dark humour as the nurses/ doctors who named her.

My vote is it's dark but in a cool way.

Meanwhile I'm wondering what happened to the mother. Was it by choice she abandoned her baby or was it taken from her? Has she been trafficked? Is she okay?

I recently saw an episode of Law & Order where they find a baby down a drain, and the mother had been murdered, because the guy who got her pregnant wanted to cover it up.

I do hope little Elsa recovers and has a happy life. I doubt they'll find her mum, but I hope she's adopted into a loving home.

Maddy70 · 21/01/2024 04:09

You're over thinking. Its a common name and maybe the name of the person who saved her or attended to her so may have a lovely connotation.
