That’s an interesting thought!
WPATH started out as the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association and was a professional org for people working with transsexual patients.
At some point, trans activists were able to join and by 2007 (transman, law lecturer, founder of Press for Change and ‘architect of the GRA’) Stephen Whittle was the first ‘non medical professional’ WPATH chair.
i just had a look (and yes, if you join WPATH you automatically have membership of EPATH/USPATH) and they have two tiers of membership (that cost the same). Non professional members do not have voting rights, however, if you look at the areas of study that make students eligible for future ‘professional membership’ it includes ‘queer studies’ and ‘anthropology’ 🤦♀️
So basically all the non-medical-professionals who create their own small transactivist orgs (eg Mermaids) can get full membership.
I wonder if WPATH’s membership will be whittled down (pun intended) until it’s just the non medically qualified activists left? Will WPATH the professional or die a slow death after being eaten alive by the Gender Diversity Vampire?
