I might be too late for anyone to discuss, I have only just watched it.

i had a vague notion that it was empowering turning things on their head stuff approach to sexual assault so put it in. I was loving it and then the final part left me feeling dreadful.

I’ve been reading through some other threads and see there are many views. I wanted a film for women, I was loving the fantasy. The revenge. I’m so cross she died and bizarrely annoyed by the whole thing!

Carey Mulligan is great though.

i wonder if anyone else has watched recently and has thoughts or might help me feel less annoyed!

Fennell said that she wanted to subvert rape revenge film tropes and that it wasn't realistic that a hot woman in a mini skirt could realistically take on a man and come out on top. She called this ending rape revenge realism. I found it both infuriating as you want her to come out on top but also, really powerful when you realise that Cassie's behaviour was so damaging to her; it's a reminder of why women don't take physical revenge on men.

Yes I’m just reading some online articles around that. Odd thing is, I like films but don’t think I have watched anything or was even really aware of rape revenge as a genre. It’s interesting reading.

I really enjoyed it and thought the ending was right, but it was very upsetting.

I was upset for days after watching it. But I think if she’d lived to see and enjoy the revenge on those men it would have been a pretty naive film.

I felt really quite awful. But maybe that’s just how it is rather than because it was a bad ending.

i wanted something uplifting/empowering. My mistake.

i am now watching the wonderful Sarah Lancashire.

I agree with this.

Amazing movie.

I thought it was a great movie - I like a thought provoking film. Was expecting great things from Saltburn and was sadly disappointed.

I watched it after reading this thread. I've watched "I Spit On Your Grave" and "Handgun" so rape revenge is a thing. Could also include "Kill Bill" as violent female revenge.

I enjoyed it and also thought Carey Mulligan was brilliant. I was not shocked by the ending (from the spoilers here) but I appreciated the fact that a desperate man could kill a woman literally with one arm tied behind his back.

Her final revenge was brilliant but needing to die to get revenge is very common. Revenge is a dead end - protagonists often die to get it, either physically or spiritually. Although the man survived in Silent Night, his wife left him and his real life collapsed.
