My daughter went with her partner ( female) for an MRI scan..
The guy doing the scan said to her " no point me asking you if you are pregnant because l can see clearly you're one of them".
She was anxious about the MRI ( brain).. that she was just so shocked and didn't say anything.
( They actually have three children between them)

OP posts:

Get her to make a formal complaint via the hospital's PALs service. That behaviour is disgusting and shouldn't be allowed to slip past

Tatumm · 07/01/2024 04:14

Very unprofessional and unkind. Definitely complain. I hope your daughter is ok.

IncognitoUsername · 07/01/2024 07:33

Definitely tell her to report it. Aside from the offensiveness of his comment, he actually was not doing his job properly as he should ask if she could be pregnant but his attitude might have made it difficult for her to answer if she might have been.

What a bizarre thing to say. Having a female partner does not stop someone being pregnant. Definitely complain.

Well, it does if that someone is a man.

OP, this is shocking and unprofessional behaviour and the technician needs to be investigated.

Sadly, in recent times I've noticed an increase in open hostility towards lesbians and these sorts of remarks are brushed under the carpet or simply disbelieved by HR investigators and soforth. Even with evidence. It's really upsetting and makes me feel like we've taken a giant step backwards in the past 15 years.

A female partner stops a man from being pregnant?! Has anyone told LOJ? Another thing to blame on women! Grin

Do you even understand what you've written? It's OK. Reading comprehension is poor for many adults in this country. You aren't alone.

SapphosRock · 07/01/2024 12:52

Unless your 'daughter' is in fact male this is very unprofessional.

I am surprised, the NHS has to be very careful about these things. It usually goes the other way with men being asked if they are pregnant just in case they are female men.

LondonLass91 · 07/01/2024 13:17

I very much doubt this happened. I'm sure she misheard him.

theDudesmummy · 07/01/2024 13:53

This does not sound totally believable frankly (too shocking), but if it did happen as described, a formal complaint to the hospital Trust should be made immediately, as well as a complaint to the registering body of the person who made the comment (was he a radiographer, in which case it is the HCPC).

Riva5784 · 07/01/2024 14:15

Even if she misheard him, it's still a patient communication issue that is worth reporting. At best the technician was not making himself clear.

As pp said he should be asking if she could be pregnant and he might have made it difficult for her to answer if she were.

I know you were probably trying to be funny, but listen, in this day and age everyone and everything can get pregnant. Men, woman, people identifying as toasters. It's bloody ridiculous.

TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy · 07/01/2024 15:14

All radiographers are members of hcpc and must adhere to professional standards. I would absolutely report this as unacceptable. It has real health implications and the pregnancy question must always be asked of anyone between the ages of 12 and 55 years regardless of sexuality. We are also expected to ask it of anyone regardless of apparent sex due to instances of trans men being examined whilst pregnant.
