Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

An "I'm Spartacus" phrase that almost everyone would sign up to?

I'm wondering if it would be possible to have a phrase for the "I don't understand but this is madness" friends and colleagues of those who are being harassed and ostracized?
Or is everyone who hasn't looked into gender ideology too cautious?
I'm pretty sure 99% of people don't believe humans can change sex but would they actually stand up in a meeting or put in their email signatures "my name is Dave and I don't believe humans can change sex"?

I don't think there is, because there isn't a phrase that wouldn't result in opposition. Look at the furore about the author a few years ago who said 'transwomen are transwomen' in an interview. What could be more reasonable than that.

Having said that, I do think it's necessary to differentiate between no-marks making a fuss on Twitter and actual damage - and I know there are professions and settings where the former really does damage people.

Most people very sensibly avoid unnecessary drama.

So for all of us, we have our own personal tipping points.

Mine was looking at the sweeping away of women's rights, and the unnecessary medicalisation of children based largely on unevidenced theory pushed by activists.

I find eyebrow raising does a lot of work, fwiw.

StealthSpinach · 03/01/2024 12:38

I think the reverse is happening…
Any display of pronouns, rainbows, baby pink and baby blue, “ally status” or the like is a 100m high, flashing neon sign advising of gender ideology/TWAW delusion/flat earth beliefs and allows those people to be instantaneously characterised.
Works for me.

worstofbothworlds · 03/01/2024 13:40

Unfortunately I am an academic (though in STEM, you'd think the students were more sensible but it's everywhere) so every 20 and 30 something woman in admin is an "ally". Older male professors not so much but they are all "well I don't really understand".

Commiserations, OP, that sounds really hard.

"I support single sex services" is the best one for where we are right now I think.

popebishop · 03/01/2024 16:45

Sex is real and sometimes it matters.

cloudtree · 03/01/2024 16:48

I work in an area which has a lot of pronoun virtue signalling. The best one I’ve seen on an email signature is “I am female”. Difficult for the employer to object but makes it clear the person isn’t just going along with the craziness.

CliantheLang · 03/01/2024 17:19

Is there a phrase for people who think water is wet? Or one for people who "believe" that 2+2=4?

There isn't a phrase because one isn't necessary.

Violetparis · 03/01/2024 17:30

I work in the NHS, I presume that those who don't have pronouns in their email signatures think it is a load of bollocks, the majority don't have them though a significant number do.

newtlover · 03/01/2024 17:35

who is this signal aimed at? at TRAs, their allies, fellow TERFs ir TERF-adjacent, people who just haven't given it any thought?

dapsnotplimsolls · 03/01/2024 19:12

We could all just carry a picture of Isla Bryson and those pink leggings around with us.

Yes. It's often the silences and absence of signals that are just as telling.

"I support single sex services" is the best one for where we are right now I think.

If you made it “Hi, I support single sex services” you could use the acronym HISSSS. Add in a witchy finger gesture and a cackle and I think it would be perfect.

bollockstoallthat · 03/01/2024 19:21

"I am an adult human female" on email signature.

Says what it means and means what it says.

My graphic design skills are not up to the task but this deserves to be a meme / t-shirt.

Hmm... I guess I'm thinking more of something that civilians would find obvious (like, gravity exists).

Hi, I'm Sinner and my pronouns are Fo / Ad!

(Not to you...)

If civilians don’t find it obvious that there are only two sexes or that people cannot change sex then nothing is obvious I’m afraid.

"Agree! It is really hard to understand why so many people think humans can change sex." Or "... are claiming there's no difference between male and female", or even "... have suddenly insisted the penis is a female organ".

"Where did we go wrong, did we not teach them about sexual reproduction?"

With allies, I have said I wonder if it's really kind to encourage people to believe in physical impossibilities. Unfortunately, they've mostly gone straight into screaming BIGOT so I can't claim any success with that approach.

I'm very happy to describe myself as a gender abolitionist - because I am, and have been since my early teens or before. People don't generally know what it means and aren't asking for a Feminism 101, so I guess I get written off as a boomer Karen old fart with no nuance 😏

When talking to over-forties who are trying to be right-on and "how brave" about kids who want to transition, I've found that a dubious headshake and "these young people, they don't really think about the long term do they?" works quite well.

WarriorN · 04/01/2024 09:04

Yes, I add "it's just all so sexist though, isn't it?"
