Yes we are - not just in the GC realm but also feminism in general. But to be fair German reality is also behind UK developments as regards de facto Self-ID in many areas of public and private life. Prison authorities are much more conservative, for instance, although a couple of länder have recently begun drafting to permit males into female prisons after also assessing the needs of all inmates (TRA organizations protested the latter). Changing one's name is generally impossible outside of a GRC or after official approval if your parents had the bad idea of naming you Adolf. And in general, radical policy changes of any kind aren't really a thing here - we never has Thatcherism either, due to our policy process being so much more consensus-based.
So we'll have to wait and see how bad things really get before there's more publicity and people/parts of the media start kicking off.Self-ID is being pushed through as much on the sly as possible - they even drafted the whole thing so as to obviate the need for approval by the second chamber, meaning the federal states.
What's really problematic about this whole process is that the German language doesn't distinguish between sex and gender. So allowing anyone to change their markers by self-declaration effectively eliminates sex as a legal category altogether. This in spite of the fact that the constitution doesn't just stipulate equality of the sexes but also an active role of the state to work towards it. With luck, space here for a constitutional challenge.
