Sorry if there's already a thread, couldn't see one:

I just don't know what to make of this. This person (no-one seems to know if they are biologically male or female, I assumed female but apparently someone who has met them says otherwise)

Using 'it' as a pronoun is so self demeaning, it's the sort of thing I might say as a piss-take if asked mine.

'7ven' (pronunciation nightmare) is either incredibly unwell or a total narcissist (maybe both?) In any case why the hell are the parents going along with this?!

Wtf is wrong with Canada?! Oh yeah, Justin Trudeau

There really comes a point to start questioning what exactly you are enabling when you go along with this kind of thing, and whether that you mean it well actually excuses it.

Justme56 · 03/12/2023 11:55

The young person was bullied. Takes on a new identity (based off a queer TV character on Canadian TV). Finds a group of people who will most probably have a range of issues themselves - a group they feel safe with. The make-up is interesting - almost mask like, something to hide behind. Refers to themselves as ‘it’ - is this another way of protecting themselves. Mum plays along. I’ll end where I began - this person was bullied - so badly they had to move schools. This is where the problem lies. Just my thoughts.

Seainasive · 03/12/2023 12:01

So sad that the child couldn’t just be a little goth / EMO with likeminded friends and grow out of it like we got to do.

ditalini · 03/12/2023 12:36

7even is presumably from the film so I wouldn't have an issue with pronunciation. Or maybe from the US convenience chain.

It is presumably just a way to be "the most non-binary", though bad mummy misgenders it by using them. The horror.

They come across to me as an absolutely bog standard awkward teen which is the really baffling thing. Teens like 7even have always been around expressing their "not like other teens" self via makeup, piercings, clothes, music and mostly becoming fairly conventional by their mid 20s. Now they're off to the gender clinic.

This. Honestly how bad a parent do you have to be to let your young teen dictate everything?

How awful a journalist do you have to be to put this on the news?

JellySaurus · 03/12/2023 14:08

"That's nice, dear. Now, do you want chicken or fish fingers for dinner?"

I don’t think that was the timeline given in the narrative. 7ven started to ‘ come out’ at high school and was then ‘bullied’ , so moved schools and found a supportive peer group.

I Hope thé very deep voiced person with the purple mane at the end is not part of the group, though.

I blame Ed Sheeran. No really, bear with me, I'll explain. Kids used to find their tribes through music. They expressed their rebellion through music (goths, punks, metallers, etc). They shocked adults through their choice of music.

Now, music is dull and corporate. Ed Sheeran is lovely and everyone and their mum loves him. There is virtually no way to rebel through music. Ditto fashion. Even coming out as gay doesn't upset your granny any more. Gender identity is literally the only thing that is controversial and upsets adults.

ApocalipstickNow · 03/12/2023 16:43

George Costanza wanted to name his future child Seven.

Tbf I always like Six from Blossom.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 03/12/2023 17:15

@PonyPatter44 I disagree about Sheeran. It all went downhill with the Stock Aitken Waterman Hit Factory around the beginning of Kylie Minogues rise to pop fame.

But broadly speaking I agree that this is just the new version of mods/rockers, emo, goth, punks and new romantics. The fashion, the make up, the fitting in with like minded groups, were all born from music right from the Brighton scooter runs/fights of the 60s. It's just teenage angst and parents not saying no.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 03/12/2023 17:23

I wished I hadn't watched that. Within 4 seconds my thoughts immediately turned to this is what seriously disturbed individuals do to faces in photographs to obliterate the person, they scribble or score the paper. So so sad they aren't getting the help they so obviously need.

Rightsraptor · 03/12/2023 17:34

I'd say natal male, @Catsanfan, judging by the general size relative to its mother (yay! I'm using preferred pronouns), the knees wide apart when playing cards with mother and also that bizarre triangular leg position when lying on the floor about two thirds of the way through.

Catsanfan · 03/12/2023 17:39

@Rightsraptor yes, fair point.

@PonyPatter44 agree that this is this generation's way of rebelling

The dangerous thing is that this particular adolescent rebellion has been weaponised by much greater cultural forces which are absolutely not evident to the adolescents.

Yes, in any other era this would be a bog standard rebellion that the kid will eventually move on from. "It" doesn't even bother me that much because it's so ridiculous. The worry is that this identity is being validated and celebrated by adults, and that may make it much harder for the teen to leave behind, which they will inevitably want to do at some point.

theDudesmummy · 03/12/2023 19:19

And that this is the vanguard for something else.

Catsanfan · 03/12/2023 19:23

Yes, it's so worrying in many ways. Being punk didn't do anyone any harm, but chemical castration and breast amputation should NOT be the 'trendy' thing to do. Apparently 'it's mother had another 'transgender' child.

DuesToTheDirt · 03/12/2023 20:15

I just don't have enough eye rolls for this.

TempestTost · 03/12/2023 21:18

My impression here is this kid is actually rather more disturbed than just an average goth or emo kid. I'm very uncomfortable with the fact that someone felt this should go in the news.
