Finally we are seeing progress on jailing pregnant women with judges told that they should avoid babies being born in jail and to consider the harm to the baby.

Menopausal or pregnant female offenders could be spared jail https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12804979/sentencing-guidelines-menopausal-pregnant-women-spared-jail.html?ito=native_share_article-nativemenubutton

The Sentencing Council for England and Wales is consulting on plans to increase the use of 'rehabilitative' sentences like unpaid work or drug treatment programmes.

Good. Now how about not jailing women who fail to pay their TV licenses?

Igmum · 29/11/2023 18:31

Ok, so technically it's failing to pay the fines for failing to pay for the TV license but you know what I mean

Whilst this is great news-how about no males in female jails....ever, no matter how they identify, or what hormones they are taking....

Good.

I am slightly surprised by this as I thought it was already the case that jail was very much a last resort for pregnant women?

On the whole I agree however....a woman I was involved in caring for went to prison when pregnant. She was absolutely incredibly chaotic in the community despite loads of effort to really help, impossible to get in for antenatal care, self neglecting, mental health in tatters, poly drug use etc etc. really concerns baby wouldn't be born alive and she may end up dead too. I am pretty certain prison saved her and her baby's life. But this is because we were able to coordinate excellent care for her in prison. Clearly that can't be assured nationally from the shit show we have seen, and so the sentencing guidelines have my support.

Tht's an interesting extra perspective, thanks. So perhaps what is needed is extra support for women in that position, a national programme.
