“Feminism has fought no wars. It has killed no opponents. It has set up no concentration camps, starved no enemies, practised no cruelties. Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for better working conditions, for safety on the streets, for childcare, for social welfare, for rape crisis centres, women’s refugees, reforms in the law. If someone says, ‘oh I’m not a feminist,’ I ask, ‘why? What’s your problem?”

...

In 1980, Dale published Man Made Language – originally her PhD thesis.
The work established her as a feminist academic and remains influential in contemporary analysis of sexism in language and in the social and political reality it creates.

Her research unearthed a factor that even women questioned: in mixed sex conversations it was not women who talked too much.
It was men who dominated and who interrupted when others, especially women, were speaking.

She was delighted when the word ‘mansplaining’ gained currency.

She noted that until the terms ‘sexism’ and ‘sexual harassment’ were coined, women who objected to men’s behaviour were mocked as lacking a sense of humour.

( ... In London she joined the Fawcett Society, a charity named after Millicent Fawcett, a suffragist and women's rights campaigner. She adopted the purple, green and white of the suffragists and determined that in future she would wear only purple. ... )

I will admit I was not as aware of her work as I probably should have been. So partly posting as a reminder that many of our gains aren't because of the well known "names" we hear today, but the many women who consistently worked and contributed to women's liberation over the years.

(sorry in the wrong forum - have asked MNHQ to move.)

She was a brilliant woman. I am so sorry to see this.

Do read Man Made Language - it's a classic.

I'm sorry to hear this. I met her once in London, many years ago, and she was very intersting to talk to.

Her book opened my eyes (and ears!) as a student of linguistics. Have read many weighty feminist tomes over the years, but her book, and Deborah Tannen's, are the ones that have stuck with me most. Very sorry to hear of her passing.

She was a very important feminist thinker and speaker back in the day. And "Man Made Language" is a classic.

Very sad to hear this. I used her work on man made language for my English degree. I do not understand how anyone who has read and understood how language has not been kind to women, how for so many years we had no words that were ours, can go along with identity politics. It makes no sense at all. Any cursory glance at how powerful language can be, how we can be manipulated with words, must surely recognise what is happening to women all over again.

Oh no, I hadn't heard. She had a profound impact on my thinking. RIP

I haven't had time to weed through these, but on facebook have seen links to YouTube videos in which Dale Spender's writing is discussed by other women / Women's groups (eg WDI) and thought it might be a way for some of us who aren't aware of her writings to get an idea of them (in addition to personal recommendations by PP) https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-e&q=Youtube+Dale+Spender#ip=1

I read some of her work years ago at uni. Sorry to hear of her passing.

Thank you for posting this, I hadn't heard elsewhere.
