As part of their display for 16 days of activism against VAWG, GWL have a display that includes placards from 'Cabaret Against Hate Speech'

'The curator told us that the placards included some from Cabaret Against Hate Speech'

CAHS is Tom Harlow, a drag queen who led a protest and was condemned by the First Minister, Humza Yousaf, for swearing at and haranguing feminists attending an international feminist conference in Glasgow.

It seems staff from Glasgow Women's Library were also protesting the feminist conference.

Harlow had a show for children cancelled due to concerns over his work as a stripper and sexualised stage persona.

'An entertainer has cancelled plans to lead a children's storytelling event, after a backlash from parents who learned he also works as a stripper and drag act.
Tom Harlow wears a mermaid's tail and strings of pearls to read "alternative, empowering fairy tales" to children.
His website say his adult shows feature "striptease...burlesque... fetish".'

Glasgow Women's Library have repeatedly chosen to support this man in his protests against women and feminism.

It’s bizarre this trend of drag queens and strippers reading to children. I don’t know why you’d match up the two. What’s the reason? Obviously people can do multiple jobs and volunteering but this isn’t just someone who happens to be a drag queen and also volunteers with children completely separate. It’s a movement and it’s bleeding the two into each other. I’d hope most are age appropriate but some videos I’ve seen with drag queens and children haven’t been even when shoes are supposed to be child friendly.

It is utterly bizarre isn't it?!

ArthurbellaScott · 26/11/2023 15:45

I've just noticed one of the placards was the one held up by someone protesting the showing of the 'Adult Human Female' film at Edinburgh University recently.

So there is a theme, here. Anti feminist, anti-women protests are being held up as somehow an important part of '16 days of activism against VAWG'.

People heckling, abusing and trying to stop women from meeting are now being lauded by Glasgow Women's Library? Or perhaps the display is showing the need for feminism today and the aggressive silencing of feminist discourse?

They call them 'sex clowns'.

This would be the same Glasgow Women's Library that has apparently mislaid a large archive of lesbian material that they were donated.

(Not saying that they have got rid, but apparently if you ask to see it you can't really)

What does ‘women only’ mean?

GWL recognises that women can thrive and foster skills and knowledge in spaces which are orientated around women and their lives and experiences. We also seek to redress sexism, discrimination and misogyny by promoting the lives, work, histories and achievements of women from a range of backgrounds. For these reasons, some of our events, classes and workshops are for women only, and sometimes are targeted at specific groups in particular, for example Muslim women, Women of Colour or younger women.

All women-only opportunities and events are inclusive of Trans and Intersex women, as well as non-binary and gender fluid people who are comfortable in a space that centres the experiences of women.

GWL is sensitive and inclusive of all gender and sex identities, and we recognise the complexity and limitations of language that can occur when describing gender specific events. As such, our women-only statement will be reviewed regularly.
All women only classes, workshops or events will be marked clearly in our print programmes and online.

See GWL’s Core Values for more information and what to expect when you come to GWL.

Glasgow Women's Library was transed years (decades) ago. From memory, so not fact checked, it may have coincided with the time that they got a lot of funding to move to refurbished premises.

And the irony, well worse that that, is prior to this happening, what had been the Lesbian Archives based in England had been looking for over a year for somewhere to take on their collection on the basis that it would be a women only resource. And at that time GWL was the only one who promised they would do that (ie the Feminist Library was already co-opted).

And of course, even if they could be persuaded to give up that collection, there isn't any where in the UK who could house it under those conditions.

RhannionKPSS · 26/11/2023 20:33

Just to add insult to injury The GWL unfortunately raised money to buy the suffragette medal that was recently up for auction…

ArthurbellaScott · 26/11/2023 20:34

I remember that. Did they get it?!

Cabaret for the hate was both Tom Harlow and Beth Douglas, I think. Beth Douglas is the person that Alex Coke Hamilton, leader of the Scottish Lib Dem’s said “we did it for you Beth”. “Did it for” being passing the GRR bill that took away my rights to privacy safety and dignity in law, which is a worry as people like Beth threaten people like me with violence.

it makes no sense to me at all.

ArthurbellaScott · 27/11/2023 08:02

Thanks, Stealth, I thought it was just the one bloke. Douglas is a frightening individual.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 27/11/2023 08:25

Beth seemed to do some of the social media and targeting of women. Tom did all of the warbling and public abuse of women.

beth has been quiet for a while but seems to pop up in the crowd at LWS events. I assume that something happened to encourage Beth to be less online after he was removed as co convener of the rainbow greens for misogyny and threats against women.

Mir seems that Edinburgh university staff pride network paid vacated for the hate to abuse women at that priest, so I’m pleased that GWL have curated the signs, but not for the reasons they think,

stealtheatingtunnocks · 27/11/2023 08:26

Cabaret. And protest. My autocorrect is enthusiastic

ArthurbellaScott · 27/11/2023 10:41

Yes, I did think it was possibly worth preserving the evidence of anti women, anti feminist protests. Much as the anti suffragette posters are fascinating to look at now.

What I'm curious about is how closely linked GWL are to CATHS. Are they supportive of them? Do they discriminate against GC feminists?

Their FAQs are a joke, throwing a whole sex under the bus.

Strewth, GWL, why dont you just change your name to Glasgow Rainbow Library, because you categorically do not represent biological women.

Vile DARVO gaslighting.

RhannionKPSS · 27/11/2023 16:13

Unfortunately yes, the GWL did get the suffragette medal.

I don't think it's so much bizarre, as totally cynical, and all about 'normalisation'. Which is one of these loons' biggest goals. Drag queens and young kids: perfectly fine. Sex work is work: totally fine. And so on.

It seems to me that this movement is all about trashing boundaries... of which child/adult entertainment is just another one. With the added bonus of spreading this pernicious ideology into the youngest generation.

Hedgehogdetective · 28/11/2023 07:32

So if someone is a drug dealer and a children’s entertainer that would be okay? You can’t do both. That’s what safeguarding is
