Bear in mind that the current RSE guidance provided by the Ministry of Education includes crackers such as this:

But didn’t the right recently win the elections in NZ and aren’t the right bad?

PatatiPatatras · 25/11/2023 06:34

Even a broken clock is right at least once a day, if not twice.

It is possible for them to be assholes in other policies and be spot on on how to speak up for women and girls.

Sorchamarie · 25/11/2023 06:36

The main party would be best described as centre right, really. Still far far left compared to the democrats in the US.

Yes, I believe it was Stephen Colbert who described Labour (NZ's centre-left party) to his audience as "what we would call a left-wing socialist party", and described National (NZ's centre-right party) as "also what we would call a left-wing socialist party".

ArthurbellaScott · 25/11/2023 06:47

That sounds really promising, OP. Well done to the women of SUFW for their persistence and hard work.

'The SUFW position is that “gender identity” should be categorised and treated as a belief system in government policy making. As with any other religious or philosophical belief it should not be grounds for discrimination - but it should not be incorporated into government policy or enforced to the detriment of sex based reality.'

Brilliant. We need this everywhere.

teawamutu · 25/11/2023 08:14

This is fantastic - I thought NZ was captured beyond all hope.

The poll is absolutely striking. Despite the capture of the legislature, state, schools and media, the VAST majority of NZ citizens don't support males in women's spaces or sports.

Gives me hope.

Go kiwi terven!

The poll also blows a hole in the “anti LGBTQ+” teaming. A majority support same sex marriage but there’s very little support for bio males who identify as women in women’s sport or bathrooms. It’s stark.

Well, this is encouraging!
Do NZ posters think KJK's visit was a catalyst for these changes or would they have happened anyway?

FizzyLemons · 25/11/2023 19:39

(NZ lurker) The media publicity around KJK's visit was so biased that most people believed she was a nazi hate-speaker and had no idea what she was actually trying to do. Personally, Laurel Hubbard raised the absurdity of the issue and some conversation around it, and KJK's visit encouraged me to look more into what was actually happening around the world. And then I came across mumsnet and properly peaked! I have still never seen anything factual in the media about KJK - when she announced she wouldn't be returning, the media acted like they had won. We don't have many media options unlike the UK, what we do have seems captured.

NZ is very much a follower in most things - the discussions happening in the UK are not happening here yet, and most people really don't know what's going on elsewhere. One of the minor coalition parties had a campaign policy around transwomen not using women's toilets, separate sports categories, etc. The majority party and subsequently the media made it into a bit of a joke - like is that all he's got to worry about, cost of living, bla bla? I'm not sure if it got through the coalition negotiations - I haven't heard anything about it so am guessing not.

Oh and yes, I'd definitely agree with the previous poster that our new government is slightly right of centre. The majority party is pretty centrist, with the two minor parties in the coalition a bit further to the right.

That’s really interesting FizzyLemons, can’t beat an analysis from someone ‘on the ground’. Thankyou

ArthurbellaScott · 25/11/2023 20:15

I do wonder if the countries that go extreme into gender ideology fall faster. Sadly because of harms done.

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/11/2023 21:55

Thanks @FizzyLemons

Dare I hope that the new political administration will be less indulgent of the loathsome Shaneel Lal and Ilia Wotsit?

A good example of our rubbish media - I've not heard of Shaneel Lal, but when I googled just now, I see that he is a prominent contributor of opinion pieces to the main newspaper. Our last government would have agreed to anything from anyone as long as they could claim to 'be kind'. I feel like NZ just jumped on the bandwagon and adopted as gospel any old crap that was being spouted, and most people have no clue.

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/11/2023 23:25

Lal was the chief orchestrator and rabble rouser at KJK's Auckland event.

GourmetLettuceMix · 26/11/2023 03:06

SUCH a relief to read this article in North and South magazine this month. I normally just read it at the library but actually bought it last week as had heard about the article. It is very, very good.

And someone who incited some of the hatred towards KJK.
I have stopped buying the Herald.

Sorry cross posted. I was quite shocked by it.
