Yes, I know I should have expected this given the title, but a small part of me hoped it was just a nice book about people's achievements, some who were gender nonconforming.

At least it was easy to spot as they left the brick chin in

Wonder how his family felt about coming second to cheap nylon hosiery.

I'd never heard of this person. So I read the wiki*. Apparently (because wiki) claimed to have the DSD de la Chappelle(?), so was biologically female, although fathered children, and was quite scathing about XY transitioners.

Seems to have lived an interesting life, even discounting the trans stuff.

*some stuff in the wiki about phalloplasty/vaginoplasty and reconstruction for injured soldiers that seems to have got muddled. At least when I looked.

Cowell seems to have died penniless and alone. The instruction about not publicising the funeral also seems odd, almost like shame. I bet that bit was not included in the children's book.

Well yes, that interesting life was able to be had though on account of them being male.
You'll notice in the extract he had to give up racing after his 'transition'. That's because women were not allowed to at the time.

The rest of the book features women like Joan of Arc, Mary Anning who suffered the consequences of being female and had to circumnavigate their oppression to achieve. Someone who had lots of opportunities then opted out, including abandoning their family (who of course would be financially dependant on them) is a jarring choice.

And born in the wrong body should never appear in children's literature.

You are absolutely correct 👏

I suppose I'm frustrated because it seems you either seem to have to choose between enforcing gender stereotypes or enforcing gender ideology.

I just wanted a nice book where people of both sexes did interesting things. Without the need to become a girl or boy if they weren't gender conforming.

I can't see how someone can read a whole book of men doing art and performance and women doing leadership and science and still believe that there are girl roles and boy roles and if you don't fit you should change your body.

Actually makes me sick that people are being fed this rubbish for children.

What about a kid who dares to be different in Year 8/9 by stating that they aren’t really interested in dating at the moment but are heterosexual. And that boys can have long hair and wear make-up and be heterosexual or homosexual but still be a boy. Or a girl be a lesbian and states she only fancies girls. Those are the ones daring to me different.

Dare to dream..
