Yes, that's...sorry, I have no words for that.

CorruptedCauldron · 18/11/2023 15:31

How crass. Spread your legs, eh? Horrible erasure of women in the small print too.

“1 in 3 people aged 25-49 in the NW don’t attend their cervical screening appointment.” Really?!

1 in 3 people, or women ? So 1/3 or 1/6 ?

DysonSphere · 18/11/2023 15:40

I can't actually believe the crassness of this 'advertisement'

Unbelievable.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 18/11/2023 15:54

It’s horrible. Crude and offensive to women.

I’ve had cervical cancer and improving engagement with smears is really important but this is revolting and wouldn’t make any women want to book a smear.

ValerieDoonican · 18/11/2023 15:55

Jesus! Enraging in so many ways at once 😠😠

nocoolnamesleft · 18/11/2023 15:56

Looks like it's designed by men, for the male eye.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/11/2023 15:56

Well, telling women to stop crossing their legs and spreading them instead is really going to encourage those who are already reluctant to have smears precisely because of that, isn't it?

TropDrôle · 18/11/2023 15:57

I can’t count the ways I’m offended by this!

pickledandpuzzled · 18/11/2023 15:58

It’s really important to ensure trans men access smears. The way to help that is to do targeted advertising via LGBT groups and media, not to eradicate the word woman.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 18/11/2023 15:58

Well, about half the people aged 25-49 won’t be attending because they don’t have cervices, and that’s well over one third so…

Hurroo · 18/11/2023 15:59

I'm offended by all the above, plus the mangled SPAG in the fourth line. Is it a missing full stop? Should it be a comma followed by a lower case l? Doesn't anyone check anything anymore?

Ilianor · 18/11/2023 15:59

Wtf

Froodwithatowel · 18/11/2023 15:59

I hope they're getting on those 3 out of 3 men not turning up for their cervical screening.

Ah right. So you think that people who don't even want to identify as female are best targeted by a hyper-sexualised campaign, focusing on women spreading their legs?

RainInNovember · 18/11/2023 16:07

I actually don't personally find it offensive -ducks for cover-

Don't keep them crossed ' fingers crossed everything will be fine'

1/3 people didn't attend their appointment

Men won't have been sent an appointment so aren't included in the statistic. Yes it could have said women I suppose.

The north west cancer research website (who this campaign is run by) mentions women repeatedly, in its cervical cancer section too

ThomasinaLivesHere · 18/11/2023 16:07

Don’t they do any research? I find it hard to believe a campaign like this will reach those reluctant. If anything it’ll make women who haven’t had one worry about what it’s like.

Trans women are men and are sent and appointment as their sex on the it primary care notes is recorded as female. Trans men, who have a cervix are NOT sent for because they are recorded as male

It's crossed legs, not fingers.

You might notice the crossed 'sexy' legs protruding out of the advertising boards.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 18/11/2023 16:11

At least they are getting thoroughly ratioed on Twitter.

ringoutsolsticebells · 18/11/2023 16:11

Sorry re typos

viques · 18/11/2023 16:12

In the interests of fairness I checked their last campaign for testicular and prostate cancers. We can rest easy ladies, appears “people” don’t get those cancers, only men.

BusyB333 · 18/11/2023 16:13

I disagree... people are taking pictures of it and talking about cervical screening on a predominantly female based forum so seems to be getting the message across and hopefully some ladies will go for their smear test as a result of it

RainInNovember · 18/11/2023 16:14

Yes I saw the legs. But I read ' keep em crossed' as a play on words. That's just how I saw it.

I am offended by a lot of the easing of women and lots of advertising I do find insensitive etc. I'm just sharing that personally I don't see issue with this.
It makes people look, it's advertising

yetanotherusernameAgain · 18/11/2023 16:14

Was that campaign designed by men? I can't imagine any woman who has experience of smear tests and understands the hurdles that need to be overcome (embarrassment/discomfort/pain) would come up with that. Although to be fair, I can't imagine any male health professional who understands the hurdles would come up with that either.

To give them a crumb of the benefit of the doubt, perhaps the "keep 'em crossed" line is supposed to allude to keeping your fingers crossed for luck, ie don't rely on luck not to get cervical cancer, get tested instead? But I'm really stretching on that one.
