Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

On trains, the rail industry and BTP are rolling out a new, ongoing anti-sexual harassment campaign to educate passengers on how to recognise situations of sexual harassment, how to intervene safely, and how to report perpetrators to keep all passengers safe from harassment while commuting to work, home, or wherever their destination may be.

I'll be interested to see the content of the campaign. Not only as above but information about how seriously reports are taken, investigations made, cautions issued etc.

Terrible phrasing - do they mean a third of women have been harassed on public transport at some point?

If so, I'd be astounded the rate was that low. I don't know any woman who says she hasn't.

Tallisker · 18/11/2023 18:15

I wish they'd highlight that it is men doing the harassing, it doesn't just happen. Men do it to women! Name the problem - men's behaviour. And women are the victims, and it is right and proper to highlight them.

BTP were useless when I reported an sexual harassment experience on a train a few years ago. I wouldn’t bother if the same thing happened again.

TiredArse · 18/11/2023 19:13

Only one in three?

Toseland · 19/11/2023 09:32

I just don't believe it - every woman I know or have ever known has been sexually harrassed on public transport.

I think I've titled the thread badly, sounds like there's some sort of quota! I'm glad they seem to be backtracking on removing manned ticket kiosks at the few places that still have them. Train and underground platforms can be lonely places, without even the passing traffic of bus stops. Although as it's only the busier places that still have staff, perhaps it wouldn't have made much difference. I've fortunately never been in the situation where you might have to choose between staying on the train with the guy or stepping onto a lonely platform when he might be right behind you.

There should be more about the men who are committing these assaults. I wonder how it would break down? Middle aged professional types dominate the 'crafty grope on crowded rush hour', younger men 'catcall and sexualised pestering' in the evening?

Also, why no figures on the number of arrests and prosecutions?

Meanwhile, at a railway station somewhere in the north west...

This doesn't exactly fall in line with the 'ongoing anti-sexual harassment campaign'

I hope the link works. For those who don't like clicking on links, the caption reads - 'We’re at Manchester Piccadilly station today kicking off our cervical cancer campaign, reminding the public ‘Don’t Keep Em Crossed’ and to attend screenings and lower the risk of cervical cancer' - alongside three huge plastic women's legs, all of differing skin tones, which are crossed. It's a bad enough campaign from northwest cancer, let alone something which should be shown at a railway station, especially given how many women and girls already feel nervous about travelling on trains.

I think the other issue is the push to take the guards off of trains. And also on the late night trains (that do have guards) they don’t walk up and down to avoid the drunks. Also the CCTV isn’t very good quality.

When my harassment happened BTP told me that some men specifically ride around the network in order to perve on women. It’s how they get their kicks.
