Movember website -About us

https://us.movember.com/about/foundation

*Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing a health crisis, yet it’s rarely talked about. Men are dying too young. We can’t afford to stay silent."

"We are the leading charity changing the face of men’s health. We know what works for men – and what doesn’t."

Fathers? Parents, surely. Brothers? Siblings, surely. Men? People, surely.

Don't get me wrong, of course men's health is important.

But why do men get to refer to themselves, and have others refer to them, as men - and women don't get the same privilege?

I don’t want men to lose their language. But if they experienced the same erasure of their sex class as women are currently facing, maybe more of them would stand with us to call out this nonsense.

What a great opportunity to remind our trans identifying male lurkers to be aware of symptoms and get themselves checked. Your prostate doesn't care about your pronouns.

But we're told that if we don't use "people with a cervix" and "people with vaginas", then transmen will ignore health messages important to them

Surely using "men" means transwomen will ignore messages in a similar way.

God, you evil terfs! Always spreading your hate 😉

Ask women's hour.

They seem to understand the hierarchy of who gets to use the sacred words of man and woman.

aname1234 · 15/11/2023 11:50

Actually it's a valid point, what if trans males are so caught up in their fantasy they forget they need the same checks.

IcakethereforeIam · 15/11/2023 12:08

I've had a quick look, using the search facility, on the site. Transwoman, transwomen and even transgender return no results. Trans woman and trans women get hits but only on the 'woman/women' bit and the results have nothing to do with trans.

It's either never occurred to them or, because it's such a man centred site, they're afraid to even infer that tw are actually men.

They do have this in the faqs 😃

Women can refer to themselves however they please. The word woman is going nowhere. You're being overly dramatic to wind people up.

If they're that daft there's no help for them anyway.

Women and men haven’t gone away as terms. The debate is about who is or is not included in the term women or men.

Movember is about awareness of the lower life expectancy and higher suicide rates of men.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness month for women.
25 Nov-19 Dec is awareness for VAWG
March is Women’s History Month

And why does the language on that website ban you from using the words woman, mother, sister etc? Why do you think you can't use those words? Why have you conveniently ignored the links I posted where the word women is used quite freely without, as far as I know, the police being called?

Chersfrozenface · 15/11/2023 12:27

October was Breast Cancer Awareness month for women.

It wasn't "for women".

On the Breast Cancer UK website there is a whole section on "New breast cancer in men resources"

I'm trying to find the statistics that show women attempt suicide at the same rates that men succeed. There's a few men in my life that love a bit of whataboutery anytime I post anything about women and are manspreading all over my social media right now.

According to Samaritans 'Research Briefing on Gender and Suicide":
"Men in the UK and the Republic of Ireland are significantly more likely than women to take their own lives – a trend that has persisted for decades (ONS, 2020; CSO, 2020). This is despite the fact that they are less likely, compared to women, to experience suicidal thoughts and to attempt suicide (Canetto & Sakinofsky, 1998; McManus et al., 2016)."

Thank you @Chersfrozenface .
I've seen a research paper documenting the vast differences. I remember being absolutely floored by the numbers. I have it saved somewhere.

Perhaps Fanuary where we all wear merkins outside our clothes to highlight it.
