‘Disabled people are sexual’: inside the audio pornography boom that is revolutionising desire | Podcasts | The Guardian

Not sure where to start with this.

Of course (most) disabled people want sex.

Why is disability conflated so often with gender stuff??

And yes, I know this is just one individual, but it's not just one example...

The sexuality of men with disabilities is often used as a wedge issue to try and gain legalisation for selling sex. The people who push this issue put no effort into tackling things that would actually help those with disabilities in their daily life such as improving public transport, improving support services for independent living or forcing companies to actually implement policies in line with the DDA 1995 (Disability Discrimination Act). It’s like queering everything is really making everything about men’s libidos.

Doesn't a lot depend on the disability? My partner is blind, so his needs are very different from someone in a wheelchair or something. In fact, his blindness is pretty much irrelevant to it, except he can't really see much sexy underwear. But he's very much straight and not into drag or anything. I suspect many disabled people would just want good sex without anything extra, like many of us who aren't disabled.

Meanwhile in Australia the government will pay for prostitutes for disabled people to have sex with. https://mycarespace.com.au/resources/why-it-is-reasonable-and-necessary-for-the-ndis-to-support-peoples-sex-lives

This article also appears to originate from the Guardian (though maybe Australia has its own, separate Guardian?)

No it's the same one. They do Aussie news online I don't think it has a paper edition.

Yep sexuality is always thought about first from the entitled male point of view.

It is a very tricky area and I really feel for families trying to navigate this, however I had to stop working in a 1 to 1 support capacity with a teenager with severe learning disabilities after he started accessing porn. I don't need to describe what started happening. Unfortunately he was too physically big for the situation to remain safe. He is now a risk to any lone female worker, maybe even family member. He doesn't have the capacity to separate what he watches from real life.

You may recall comparable discussions here that covered attempts to protect care workers from being prosecuted as pimps for booking sex workers for people with disabilities.

Exactly. It's easy to talk, wear lanyards, stick sententious links in email signatures but actual grift and remembering day-to-day things to do to accommodate others…obviously unreasonable.

Raving, I’m so sorry that you had to go through that unpleasant experience. Once again, the safeguarding of women, children and the vulnerable has to take a backseat to the male libido.

I don’t understand the mind of an activist who thinks the fight for the rights of disabled people must include the right for disabled men to access prostituted women. I mean, there are so many basic day to day things that our society fails to provide for people with disabilities so why not direct your activism there!?

These activists are obsessed with sex and with removing safeguarding boundaries and they are using every NGO & campaign group they can get involved with to promote their obsession.

I find that an article by or about someone introduced as name then as a followed by a load of dull and irrelevant...mince (usually including qweer) makes me feel stupider for reading it. And depressed. And misanthropic.

I admit I couldn't make it through this one, I tried but I could feel my brain getting smoother.

Was there any mention of how disabled people, particularly women, are more likely to be sexually assaulted? While disabled men are getting the state to pay for their jollies, is anything being done about that? Or how their predominantly female carers and nurses are overworked, under paid, under appreciated and, oh yes, sexually assaulted?

It usually goes further than the legalisation of selling sex, it is a "right to sexual intercourse", which comes across as quite rapey, but demands that taxpayers fund prostitutes for those men.

EBearhug · 03/11/2023 22:00

Surely no one has a right to sexual intercourse? That's a very incel mindset.

I agree, quite a few branches of Identitarian politics have an entitled/incel view of society.
