Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I loved the book, I don't know if that's relevant?

Pudmyboy · 31/10/2023 21:06

That looks very interesting, thanks @Kallikrates , worth keeping an eye out for it

Kallikrates · 01/11/2023 08:32

I looked more closely at the map and zoomed into the UK. There are several cases missing from the map. I tried to add one, but it wouldn't let me paste the link in. Maybe I need to sign up first?

I had also tried to find the 'it never happens' thread on this forum and I didn't locate it. My forum search skills must need polishing! Can anyone link to it please? There will be several links on that thread that should be added to the map.

There are Red Tent groups that I think are different to this collective. The RT I know in the SW accepts TW. Never encountered one in gatherings but they are included in social media and react anytime there is something about them. Lots of queer propping too.

this is interesting. Lots of 'this never happens' happenings, to be added

Grammarnut · 06/11/2023 13:03

I presume any Red Tent group is about rape and sexual assault, since the name comes from a book about Jacob's daughter, Dinah, who was raped by the prince of Schechem. My DH has written about the same subject, about twenty-five years ago, which is why I know (the story is in Genesis 34).

Queer propping?

The novel The Red Tent was about women’s lives in biblical times; the red tent was where they lived when they were menstruating. The modern movement with that name has lots of groups around the world. I was surprised that quite a few of them are TWAW, allowing males to pretend they’re sharing a female experience.

This one seems to be genuinely for women, which is great.

ChateauMargaux · 07/11/2023 12:12

I don't think it is associated with rape.. from my experience of the use of this word in western women centred activities, it relates to a space where women come to share and talk, around the physiological and emotional aspects of life that are unique to womanhood, reflecting the spaces that were reserved for women in pre modern times, during menstruation or birth most often associated with impurity . I can only find reference to the book by of that name by Anita Diamant written in 1997 and I don't know if such a space is traditionally referred to as a 'Red Tent'.

Anita Diamant herself writes: "when I hear women wax nostalgic for a monthly time-out, I feel obliged to reply that my account has nothing to do with the facts about menstrual sequestration, which for the most part has been, and remains, cruel and dangerous" and "where there used to be huts and foxholes where women were sent to suffer, we’ll build a clubhouse where sisters and friends go to relax and learn, and where mothers can tell stories about the bad old days to their unbelieving daughters."

For many women, this practice remains one of oppression rather than liberation.

(Not sure I am adding to this conversation, but I have been thinking about it.. )

Yes this is the definition of red tent that I know. Tends to be used to describe women's circles run by crunchy hippie types these days. The type of women who run Red Tent type of events are they type of women who think TWAW and who think being a TERF is the worst possible thing because can't everybody just #BeKind?

Which is a massive shame because a few years ago the red tents that I attended were wonderfully supportive nourishing places where the biological reality of being a woman was centered.

ChateauMargaux · 07/11/2023 20:36

I am grateful for the fact that the women I know who host red tent events are not TWAW types.. but also worth saying that I live in an area where we can easily avoid such a discussion.

Datdamndamp · 07/11/2023 20:54

I know a few crunchy/hippy types around Red Tent and Goddess circles and they have recently switched from TWAW to ....WTF....

😁

ChateauMargaux · 07/11/2023 21:38

That is great to hear @Datdamndamp

I have noticed less birthing people talk in doula circles on line, but maybe that's because I have unfollowed so many.
