Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Double or nothing, I guess.
Hopefully the courts vote double.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 26/10/2023 15:37

I'm trying to imagine standing up in court and saying, "yes, my client did kidnap a primary school child. Yes, he did repeatedly sexually assault her. Yes, it is possible he would have murdered her to stop her testifying against him, if she hadn't managed to call the police for rescue. Neverthless I definitely think the previous judge was overly harsh when he handed down a sentence of 20 years".

MissPollysFitDolly · 26/10/2023 15:40

The BBC are just ridiculous. From the article: Bryson was initially placed in a female prison after being convicted of raping two women while she was known as a man called Adam Graham.

As for Andrew Miller, I hope they don't let the appeal proceed. Vile man.

AnnaMagnani · 26/10/2023 15:40

They all appeal. Every prisoner I've met has an appeal going.

Means nothing as successful appeals are rare as unicorn poo.

That is a bloody ridiculous contortion to try to avoid the fact that man identified as trans.

floranginajelly · 26/10/2023 16:11

20 years?! Is that all?

AnnaMagnani · 26/10/2023 16:15

20 years is a long sentence. Some people with life sentences will be out in less.

And for that type of offence, he is more or less guaranteed to be turned down on his first few attempts at parole.

PaterPower · 26/10/2023 16:20

It’s dishonest reporting. The Beeb will do anything to avoid labelling the guy as trans, even though that’s what he identified himself as.

If I recall correctly, this bloke didn’t apologise for his crimes, nor for what he’d put his victim through.

But he did take the time to say he hoped his actions didn’t “reflect badly on the wider trans community” (or something similar).

I have no reason to doubt your personal credibility.

However, my confidence in the CJS is at such an all time low when it comes to justice for women and girls that as much as I hope you're right, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the convicted offender is "too vulnerable" to be held in a male prison etc. (I know that's nothing to do with the appeal which is the length of the sentence.)

AnnaMagnani · 26/10/2023 16:32

Don't worry and my experience is England not Scotland, who appear to be bonkers.

But I meet a lot of guys who tell me they are going to be released soon because of appeal or parole and quickly learned to ignore this as they never are.

Have you seen the BBC programme Parole? Really good insight and I found my gut reaction in the first 1 minute was what the Parole Board did every time.

Plasmodesmata · 26/10/2023 16:53

Lots about that reporting doesn't make sense. "He is transitioning to become female" but is referred to as a man dressed as a woman, but Isla gets "convicted of raping two women while she was known as a man called Adam Graham".
20 years not long enough.

Topofthemountain · 26/10/2023 16:55

Everyone convicted has the right to petition for leave to appeal. It is an important cornerstone of our justice system.

It would be more unusual not to.

WickedSerious · 26/10/2023 17:30

Well this is a shocking development.
