Own up, who used the last of the brain bleach & didn’t replace it? A truly dreadful day to be literate & possessed of an internet connection. <attempts to obliviate self>
As @howdoesatoastermaketoast so swiftly identified; children knowing the correct terms for their anatomy is really important for helping safeguard them. The first tip the AAP offers for teaching children about boundaries & safety is:
Use appropriate language. Teach children proper names for all body parts, including their genitals: penis, vagina, breasts and buttocks. Making up names for body parts may give the impression that they are bad or a secret and cannot be talked about.
So for some reason a member has given a presentation at the National Conference calling for the AAP to abandon that facet of child safeguarding in favour of language that is inaccurate; pornified; & unsuitable in just about every other way possible.
Of course, it’s notable that this doctor brushes off the potential harms of both binding & tucking. With the former there’s no mention that it causes breast tissue to become deformed. Pain in & deformation of the ribs & back yes - but the breast tissue issue is omitted. Even if the “good” doctor is assuming that all teenagers who wear binders will have mastectomies; she should be aware that mangled tissue makes the surgery much harder & the results worse.
Truly heinous, all of it.
