Not an entirely new insight, but apparently there's lots of new research revolutionizing our knowledge of prehistoric gender relations. Confirms my long-held view that much of evolutionary psychology is a crock of pseudoscientific bullshit based on a Fred Flintstone view of prehistory. (One of the scholars cited goes in for a bit of gender woo but don't let that distract you.)

Persistent myths about strictly defined social roles for humans in the past only limit what it means to be part of society today.

Popular evolutionary psychology has successfully liberated itself from anything much in the archaeological or fossil record. This sort of man the hunter and woman the gatherer stuff seems to be assumed rather than demonstrated.
There's a somewhat more sober account of meat eating in the ancestors of modern humans here

I know it's from 'Nature' and in the words of a biochemist friend 'just because something's in Nature doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong' but at least they talk about evidence sources, and admit that they don't know exactly how much meat was in human ancestors' diets.

The first major evolutionary change in the human diet was the incorporation of meat and marrow from large animals, which occurred by at least 2.6 million years ago.
