The number of convictions underlines the scale of the rogue officer problem in the police. All have been sacked or resigned since.

The Times has gathered details of dozens of the serving officers convicted of serious crime since March 2021 when Couzens carried out his attack on Everard. There are 145 officers convicted from all but nine of the 43 forces in England and Wales. The list also includes officers from Civil Nuclear Constabulary and the Ministry of Defence Police. There may be even more, because the police service and prosecutors say they do not compile a list of convicted officers so there is no official record.

Police officers convicted of multiple crimes could appear in more than one category
68 Sexual offences
37 Misconduct in public office
36 Violence against the person
3 Public order offences

The Met, which is Britain’s largest police force and where the leadership are carrying out a cull of rogue officers, accounts for nearly one-third of the convictions. Greater Manchester Police accounts for 13 but all the other forces had convictions in single digits. Male officers were overwhelmingly responsible for crimes — 139, compared with six women.

If they've been actually convicted since 2021 then, given the delays in the court system, presumably these mostly relate to offenses and investigations before that date. As they have supposedly made massive increases in investigations since then, there must be much larger numbers to come.

Male officers were overwhelmingly responsible for crimes — 139, compared with six women.

Well there's a surprise. </s>

That's a good point about the timings.

I wonder why the Times didn't for instance list how many police have been arrested and charged with a crime since 2021.

There are some stats here. Quite shocking.

Shocking, but good news the issue is being tackled surely?

1,000 Met Police officers suspended or on restricted duties

In figures described as "eye-watering", the Met - Britain's largest force which employs 34,000 officers - also revealed:

  • In the past year 100 officers have been sacked for gross misconduct - up by 66% on the normal rate
  • The 201 officers currently suspended represents a rise from 69 in September 2022
  • 275 are awaiting a gross misconduct hearing, a significant proportion of which involved alleged violence against women and girls, compared to 136 last year
  • The number of reports from the public and officers of alleged misconduct has doubled
Some 450 are also being investigated for historic allegations of sexual or domestic violence, the force said.
