From the DM

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12591769/roanoke-college-virginia-transgender-swimmer.html

The tw swimmer seems to be anonymous which, as it plays out, I think it a good decision. The abdication of responsibility by the 'grown ups' is disgusting. They left the young girls in an impossible situation dealing with a probably mentally ill (threatening suicide) and manipulative (threatening suicide) individual. The tw seems to have resolved the situation themselves by withdrawing, so well done for that, but it must have been unpleasant for them too. I hope it's the end of this case and we won't see a lawsuit arising from it on the tw's side.

EXC: Virginia women's swim team tell of 'demoralizing' trans battle

Three members of the Roanoke College women's swim squad have told DailyMail.com of their anger at being forced to work out how to deal with a trans woman wanting to join their squad.

Thanks cake. These are brave women. That college staff seemed to be two faced in supporting, ie. saying they support them but then not supporting them when in direct contact with that male swimmer.

I agree with them wholeheartedly. This was not just irresponsible of the college, but it is traumatising to put this decision onto these young women without even adequate support.

All for a male's feelings to be centred.

Missing point, ish, but dear god those swimsuits!

I wouldn't have wanted to wear that as a very young woman, even though I had a great body.

I'd be terrified of it slipping during use.

The only affordable hair removal up to that task would be waxing, which requires a period of regrowth each time. Would one be allowed a different costume during those times?

On top of the punishing fitness routine, on top of dealing with periods as an athlete, women of course have to deal with patriarchal beauty standards too.

RavingStone · 05/10/2023 11:25

Ok relieved to see shorts suits further down the article. Pearls unclutched.

Glittertwins · 05/10/2023 11:58

Those training cossies are quite tame. They were a lot worse when I was younger and race suits didn't exist as they do now!!
Getting back to the point, those three have shown the college up for the lacking in backbone and resilience. Good for them in standing up and I hope they don't suffer any repercussions

Their coach is a disgrace. A cowardly disgrace. Incidentally, he's a man.

All the 'grownups' involved in these decisions (or lack thereof) surely know the basic rule that you never give in to "I'll thcream and thcream until I'm thick" under any circumstances. Yet all of the successful pushes for "trans rights" involve organisations indulging this toddler behaviour in the name of "be kind".

MassiveWordSalad · 05/10/2023 12:04

I get where you're coming from @RavingStone - those cossies do jump out at you. That would appear to be a nice, posed team photo, but why? I suppose this bullshit is still what's expected of women swimmers - look sexy and smile! - and looks like a wet dream for an AGP.

Outrageous as this article sounds to British ears, this is what it's like in America. In the more liberal states (i.e. blue or Democrat-ruled states), it is generally accepted that TWAW and colleges, teachers, coaches, etc are terrified of stepping out line, hence the cowardly and pathetic behaviour of the swim coaches in the article. I've had this discussion with American friends and they all, without exception, believe that once a person transitions they ARE now the other sex and must be treated as such. So this is going to keep happening until what these young women are asking for, happens i.e. that there is a written policy in place that ring fences women's sports for those who are born female.

Boiledbeetle · 05/10/2023 12:46

I see the college are trying to hide the fact that they'd told the girls the man WAS a member of their team.

Bad college! Why don't they just save themselves a lot of bad press and start off from a point of truthfulness. It's as if they forget the internet and computers and email trails exist.

ChishiyaBat · 05/10/2023 12:53

Eurgh one man trumps 17 women, sounds about right, but good on them for fighting for what they believe in. He rage quit, but it's still a win for those girls.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 05/10/2023 12:59

‘Took a year off to transition ‘.
What does that actually mean? Are you just supposed to believe that in twelve months the magic 🧚🏻‍♂️Waves its pharmaceutical wand and a large muscular XY person somehow transforms into……well what? A large muscular XY person who isn’t?

I’m glad the girls preserved their team.

IcakethereforeIam · 05/10/2023 13:18

I was wondering that myself. Could just mean he grew his hair until it was long enough to tie back. That transition stage must be really annoying when you're swimming.

Behind all these swim teams are usually male coaches who want to "win at any cost". The cost is often the mental health of their female squad.

Luckily a lot of these coaches have been booted out of English clubs. There are some horror stories some of our older swim club committee can recount.

As to the training suits, those are quite tame. DD would frown at those bikini tan lines, though.

Don't be fooled by those legsuits; they are stupidly expensive super-tight costumes that take a good 15 mins to struggle into and are worn a handful of times.

That said, pre-pubescent girls love the ones made out of stretchy material for a couple of years.
