Work EDI policy

Been offered a job where the workplace policy states "not everyone identifies with male and female" and then goes on to say they use the term non-binary where relevant.

I think I'm okay with this, but grateful for any thoughts, as there are a lot of pro-nouns used in emails, so trying to work out the vibe! They're an organisation who input to a lot of equality stuff so I'm keen to try to ascertain whether GC views will be frowned upon (I know they shouldn't be) although my sense is generally they seem quite sensible!

Have you visited their offices?

literalviolence · 02/10/2023 14:00

They're right that not everyone identifies as male or female. But of course 99.9% of people are either male or female and that can never change. If they recognise the latter fact then it's not so much of a problem per se except that people who state this largely irrelevant fact also then use it to justify letting men into women's spaces, whilst also lying and saying that's no what they're doing. I would want to investigate further because I would worry that this organisation is anti-women and is equality washing rather than actually striving for it.

They won’t be accepting of gc views. My workplace is captured. So I sit there with my dinosaur mug and purse, nervously monitoring how quickly new joiners add the bollocks to their email signature.
I’ve been here 10 years though and have enough clout and friends I can roll my eyes at - I wouldn’t join another similar organisation.

Judyjoo · 02/10/2023 14:10

Yes I have visited. All seem lovely to be honest.
I'm just not sure how to investigate further. Nothing obvious from one perspective or the other on their website. My sense is they are playing it "safe" and being non-committal. They are in a place with a large trans-supporting community, but certainly aren't waving rainbow flags around as far as their website is concerned, which makes me wonder if they're just trying not to draw attention to themselves! (I may be overthinking!).

Erh ... "99.9% of people are either male or female ..." No. 100% of people are either male or female.

You really think one in a thousand people is neither male nor female? Or is it you think some are both male and female?

Do you think the same about other mammals? "One in every thousand cattle is neither a cow nor a bull"? (Or both a cow and a bull, perhaps?) ... "Some horses are neither mares nor stallions" Seriously?

... Or birds? "Some mallards are neither ducks nor drakes"/"Some mallards are both ducks and drakes". Huh?

Really. What nonsense.

No, apparently there are some DSDs where you literally can't tell. It's extremely rare and completely irrelevant to the point of whether a person with a dick is a woman (he's not). I got this from Kathleen Stock's excellent book. I may have got the exact stat wrong but it is a tiny, tiny, tiny percentage.

Meceme · 02/10/2023 14:41

In a very, very, very small percentage of DSD cases, the external genitalia may be ambiguous but chromosonal testing is carried out and the subject is discovered to be either male or female.
No 'other' determination is made.

ANameChangePresents · 05/10/2023 09:02

100% of people are male or female. DSDs aren't a third sex which produces a third class of gamete.

Snowypeaks · 05/10/2023 14:40

I think the evidence you have presented is ambiguous. I also don't think you'll be able to tell much more from the outside unless you ask some very direct and uncompromising questions about staff toilets or menopause policy. If it's a great job, maybe just take it. If there is a probationary period then treat that as your employer's probation as well. Just don't move house to be closer to work or anything drastic like that.

literaviolence
You've already been corrected about the incidence of third or neither sex (0%) but I understand the larger point you are making. As I understand it you are restating that sex and gender identity are different and that the company could be recognising that, OR it could be conflating the two. Perhaps we both agree that the answer to the OP's question hinges on the specifics of policies.
