'Nonsense' of gender data collected by public bodies set for review

'The Science Secretary, Michelle Donellan, will on Tuesday unveil a review into "the utter nonsense" of public bodies being urged to collect data on self-identified gender rather than biological sex.' (From the Daily Telegraph, online edition, 2nd October 2023)

Well, thank goodness they are starting to see the light and not a moment too soon.

Prof Alice Sullivan is going to head the six month review.

I'm not writing more at the mo because of dying batteries and it's some horrid time of the morning when I should be sleeping, but I couldn't wait to share the good news.

Is that the sound of wheels falling off the wagon?

I think it depends whether Labour are really determined to die on genderwoo hill, so to speak.

I absolutely love this sentence, @ArabellaScott.

Starmer's stance thus far seems to be that he isn't prepared to die on even the gentlest of gradients. So I expect more fudge from Labour.

It certainly has taken them long enough to do this, and I totally agree about Mordaunt and Keegan. But it's really welcome news, I feel. I usually wake in the dead of the night feeling hopeless about everything but this was something that really lifted my spirits. Alice Sullivan is, without doubt, an excellent choice from a sex realist perspective.

Obviously, there's still some way to go - a long way - and many have estimated that it'll take years to undo all this mess. But this is a start and I welcome its uncompromising language of 'nonsense'. That's not language used when something is being considered as a possibility or a one option of several. No, it means what it says. It is utter, arrant nonsense and always has been. Do they think this is a vote-catcher? Maybe. Perhaps it will be seen by the Labour party as a marker of public opinion that the Conservatives are taking this step and maybe they should row back on their own, deranged commitments to all things gender ID.

Toys will most definitely be thrown out of prams, that's for sure. Not our problem.

I now have the words "Genderwoo Hill" going through my head to the tune of Bluberry Hill by Fats Domino. Someone cleverer than me needs to adapt the lyrics.

ArabellaScott · 02/10/2023 09:25

Starmer does look faintly alarmed even leaning at a slight angle, it's true. That's probably where he gets his bewildered, slightly pained expresssion from. He has brushed his hair slightly too much to the left.

Thanks for posting the extract, @AutumnCrow.

I'm not worried about the wording, @pickledandpuzzled, as it's just intended to catch the eye (it succeeded in that). It's the language of conference. I have every faith that Alice Sullivan will produce a work of total academic integrity that will stand up to a nuclear bomb blast.

That’s reassuring.
