Disappointing from Modibodi

What are young women and older children going to think when they see these images...? Why not use images of art or nature if you want to be gender neutral? I suppose the marketing company thought they wanted to appeal to all possibilities but obviously to hell with women and what they might think.

Disappointing from Modibodi

A non issue for me.

Periods are stigmatised enough already, you don’t need to make it even worse for people.

I'm already boycotting modibodi for calling women "menstruators". If all they'd done was market themselves like this to female transitioners identifying as men, I wouldn't be bothered. Specific targeted campaigns at particular market segments are fine; dehumanising women is not.

Perfectly in agreement. This isn't like a man being used to sell sports bras (Nike)

Oscar is also - being an adult - shown in the adult section. Admittedly, they no longer seem to have a completely separate teens bit (what used to be ModiBodi Red) but for anyone worrying about the influence on girls - it’s quite possible they’d not see Oscar, especially if they need the smaller sizes so are shopping by age 8-10/10-12 or are just used to buying (or being bought for) by age so would get 12-14 over the adult size.

(Shops not doing period pants in small sizes is incredibly irritating. UniQlo do girls’ period period pants but have never had them in stock when I’ve looked. Everywhere else, despite an increasing number of girls starting their period in the last couple of years of primary school or even Y4[/P5/Y5 (NI)/3rd Class (IE)/3rd Grade (US, CA, AU)] period pants are limited to the women’s section. Despite the fact they’re perfect for girls just starting; & cheaper ones would bring their use within reach. ModiBodi prices for a growing child?! Well, I’m well aware there are people in the fortunate position of being able to afford it. Beyond the reach of most though.

There is a men's section for people who menstruate. So clearly they sell underwear for men who don't have a penis and testicles.

Megifer · 30/09/2023 17:35

Bizarre advert, Id scroll on assuming it's advertising mens undies

PaleBlueMoonlight · 30/09/2023 21:02

I think I am with you on this.

If you're medicalised such that you grow a moustache, do you have periods? Does anyone know? Because it does look like glamorising transition, which isn't without consequences (vaginal atrophy, I'm sure I've read). I'm not sure it's nothing to see, move along exactly b

I meant this one. I think I am with you on this.

gayhistorynerd · 30/09/2023 23:07

As someone with several trans men as friends, some people will still menstruate on testosterone, some with a changed cycle, some won't menstruate at all. Two of my friends stopped testosterone once they had the changes they wanted (voice, facial hair) and therefore menstruate. Considering the relatively young demographic I imagine most trans men have only been on testosterone for under a decade, and won't be experiencing the longer-term impacts yet.

To agree with several others, I don't see a problem with this. It's catering to a demographic who can and do require menstrual products, and it's clearly a demographic that Modibodi, as a business, find value in marketing towards.

Where are periods stigmatised?

I am not trying to be provocative by the way.

I have never felt that and am 50+.

Speedweed · 01/10/2023 04:47

What I find odd is that they are still labelling these pants 'women's' or 'boy's when they're trying to be inclusive with their visuals. Surely they should just be calling them 'classic short heavy overnight'?

Vaginal atrophy affects 50% of over 50s rising further with age. To be honest the moustache is more common in this age group too.

RavingStone · 02/10/2023 10:04

Am a modibodi customer - although also buy cheaper brands.

I'd noticed this model too and broadly agreed with those PP who thought their inclusion as a female who has periods appropriate.

Today I saw them again advertising a different item and was surprised at the number of photos in the shoot and that they're topless. So the dysphoric model ends up showing far more flesh to advertise a product to me.

The original pics I'd seen were very sensitive to the model's self image as male. These ones, not so much. They appear quite obviously female. It has an exploitative air about it. It made me feel quite protective of the model, having worked with teens with body image issues - including dysphoria.

I suppose a lot of advertising is exploitative so absolutely nothing new there. I feel the same viewing nearly naked young teens, young women with clear eating disorders and young women who've had plastic surgery selling me stuff.

But a reminder to me of the very different issues that are clumsily lumped under the umbrella "trans" and a detraction from the ethical image of the brand.

ResisterRex · 02/10/2023 17:08

I've genuinely never seen a woman over 50 with a moustache like the one in the picture. Which is not of someone over 50.

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2023 17:11

Most women wax or thread facial hair.

NO! THAT'S BRAND NEW INFORMATION

Half of all over 50s?

IcakethereforeIam · 02/10/2023 18:24

How do you thread facial hair, and why? Won't attaching beads just draw attention to it?

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2023 18:27

🤣what I meant is they have moustache’s they just remove them. To be honest perhaps this is more prevalent in darker haired populations? @ApocalipstickNow I know I googled and it said 50% over 50 rising to 75% as you age. Slightly daunting to be honest but better to know.

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2023 18:29

@IcakethereforeIam you pull out the hair with a twisted bit of cotton thread.

DentalWoes · 02/10/2023 18:29

I found their products terrible anyway. After 3 uses they had holes in. The one pair without holes the elastic went despite being on the roomier side. Terribly overpriced crap.

ResisterRex · 02/10/2023 18:30

I get it that it's undesirable to say the Wrong Thing in this particular discussion, not least due to likelihood of screenshots etc. However, I do think this is glamorising interventions that are not without quite serious effects. And we know that detransitioners are increasingly sounding the alarm. The advert isn't neutral. Far from it.

ApocalipstickNow · 02/10/2023 18:58

75% of all people over 50?

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2023 19:24

Presumably of women!@ApocalipstickNow I’ll try and find it.

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2023 19:32

The one I read this morning was more article ish and said something like 50% of women over 50 rising to 75% as the population age blah blah. This is something I wasn’t aware of and requires more reading.
