ONS press release distinguishes LGB from T

It's in the DM today, released by ONS on 23rd.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see anything at all which distinguishes between sexual orientation and gender id - seems like a radical act doesn't it.

I wonder if they've had to resist pressure to roll it all into 'queer'.

Proportion of young women aged 16-24 identifying as LGBT hits 10%

Some 10.6 per cent of women aged 16 to 24 identified as LGB in 2022, up from 4.8 per cent in 2017, according to estimates from the Office for National Statistics ( ONS ).

Thanks. I came here looking for this, I knew someone would have started a thread on it 😁

'Distribution by sex

In 2022, women were less likely than men to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB), with an estimated proportion of 3.0%, or 817,000 (Figure 2). The proportion of men identifying as LGB was estimated to be 3.8%, or 986,000.
Men (2.7%) were more than twice as likely to identify as gay or lesbian than women (1.1%), whereas women (1.9%) were more likely to identify as bisexual than men (1.1%). This continues a trend seen since 2014.'

'Sexual orientation categorised as “other”

The “other” category captures people who do not consider themselves to fit into the heterosexual or straight, bisexual, gay, or lesbian categories. It might also include people who responded “other” for different reasons such as those who did not understand the terminology or who are against categorisation.'

But the headline still says ‘women…identifying as LGBT’ which in my pedantic head means some women must be identifying as gay men.

Even in the article it says ‘women identify as LGB’ and the pie charts show women identifying as Gay or Lesbian.

So are trans men identifying as gay men, or are some of them identifying as trans and gay, but are some just identifying as trans?
That’s the trouble with forced teaming, it just confuses me things.

ArabellaScott · 27/09/2023 17:12

That's the DM headline? There's absolutely no reference at all to 'gender diverse' identities in the ONS report.

JellySaurus · 27/09/2023 17:50

Men (2.7%) were more than twice as likely to identify as gay or lesbian than women (1.1%)

Excuse me, what? Men identify as gay or lesbian? Are they talking about transwmen or are they talking about transmen? Or is this just some sort of nonsensical word salad?

Ingenieur · 27/09/2023 17:52

Yes, it would be interesting to know if they are using "gay or lesbian" to mean "exclusively homosexual", or if they do indeed mean to include trans identities.

This. It's meaningless. The data will include straight men identifying as lesbians and straight women identifying as gay, of course it's all jumped.

ArabellaScott · 27/09/2023 18:02

I suppose the trouble is that when you undermine language to such an extent that nobody is sure what the words are being used to mean anymore then we end up in the position that any data like this is worthless.

ArabellaScott · 27/09/2023 18:04

If 'men' can mean a man or a woman, and vice versa, then the LGB terms are meaningless.

IdleAnimations · 27/09/2023 18:27

Thanks to the work of Stonewall, the stats around LGBT are completely meaningless. If a straight couple can identify as gay because one of them likes to dress in what they perceive as the opposite gender or change their pronouns - it negates the discrimination Lesbian and Gay people have suffered and still do in parts of the world.

Froodwithatowel · 27/09/2023 18:27

Yes. It tells you nothing whatsoever about people who are homosexual.
