Beardyman telling us what's what alert. As we know, this is a thing.
He's an American, which may be triggering to some.
"Well howdy there" folksy opener to prove he's not going to be shrill.
He's here to tell about how change happens without getting quote preachy, which is apparently eyeroll something he does when he talks about this issue.
Follower likes him, but "You always lose me when you start talking about trans stuff."
The challenge:
A guy was elected homecoming queen at a high school in Missouri. Follower would like commentary on that "without telling me I'm a bigot… I don't know if you have a trans girlfriend or what, but you just don't provide analysis the same way. Tell me what it means for the future that a bunch of teens elected this dude, and they think it's normal."
1.45 Starts talking about his own life. Trans girlfriends won't feature, but…
1.57 Anecdote about racism – color me surprised (I'm going with US spelling here). When he were a lad, a mixed race couple was elected homecoming king/queen as a teachable moment for their elders.
2.36 Times have changed, move on.
Student body elected to make the boy homecoming queen.
For the record, I don't care. It's a student's job to be edgy.
When I was in high school in the States about 40 years ago a couple of guys started wearing skirts to school because it was hot, and girls had more freedom in the wardrobe department. The guys didn't then claim to be girls though.
"It doesn't take a brilliant political strategist to pull information out of [the student election]."
3.13 "The conservative campaign to other, and kick down, and marginalize trans people; it's not working." Significant eye contact "If as students they will vote this way, they will vote this way as they get older. They will vote in favour of policies that say trans rights are a good thing. It's really that simple. There's no deep analysis required here. What is required is why you suddenly care." Because gotcha!
4.15 Same high school had a trans homecoming queen in 2015.
4.38 Students who voted in that election will be able to vote for real now. These aren't people who are "ranting and raving" about this. They're just the average person. And they're drawing a line:
5.00 "We're not like our parents."
5.18 "People don't get more conservative as they get older. They fail to progress."
6.02 "The campaign that is being waged by the right in the United States, it's not effective. It's not working. And all it's doing is making a bunch of politicians take stances that will make them less than electable in the future."
6.28 "Because these kids, their opinion's not going to change."
Aaaaand back to racism. And the strong message that if you're of a certain age, presumably somewhat in advance of high school, it's time to get out of the way.
Manufactured outrage is giving politicians a false sense of how people really feel.
8.13 "The generation that's coming up: it's their future. They get to decide how it looks."
