A year since Mahsa Amini died.

'Currently, those not complying risk a prison term of between 10 days and two months or a fine of between 5,000 and 500,000 rials ($0.10-$10.14 at the black market exchange rate).
On Wednesday, members of parliament voted by 152 to 34 to pass the "Hijab and Chastity Bill", which says people who are caught dressed "inappropriately" in public places will be subject to a "fourth degree" punishment.
According to the penal code, that means a prison sentence of between five and 10 years and a fine of between 180m and 360m rials ($3,651-$7,302).
The bill also proposes fines for those "promoting nudity" or "making fun of the hijab" in the media and on social networks, and for owners of vehicles in which a female driver or passenger is not wearing the hijab or appropriate clothing, according to AFP news agency.
Any person who promotes violating the dress code "in an organised manner" or "in co-operation with foreign or hostile governments, media, groups or organisations" could also be imprisoned for between five and 10 years, it says.'

They will go far too far and the population will rise up.
I hope. I'd like to see an end to the murderous bastards ASAP.

God there's so much going on at the moment.

As well as this I've been reading about women's rights being eroded in Iraq. I cannot believe in 2023 this is where we are .

Women not allowed to go to university. Finishing school at 11. Not allowed to travel more than 45 miles without a male escort. Annex from national parks . Hair and beauty salons banned .

In Afghanistan, you mean? Or is this happening in Iraq, too?!

Thanks for the article Arabella. A very sobering read.

PermanentTemporary · 20/09/2023 20:03

What an absolute shower of pathetic shitbags.

Imagine scratching your beard thoughtfully and deciding 'yes, yes, this is a good thing, i want to be remembered for brutally cracking down on women dressing the way they choose, backed up with murderous violence. Well done me!'

bemorebernard · 20/09/2023 20:06

God I meant Afghanistan. Sorry .

ArabeIIaScott · 20/09/2023 20:10

It's fine, bernard. At least all that's not (as far as I know) happening in Iraq, too.

How do they think they can even justify this? It’s so sad

weasle · 20/09/2023 20:30

It's so sad.
There was an interesting piece on the radio last week about women in Iran shunning the hijab. I hope none of the brave women interviewed will be retrospectively affected by this, as the new law forbids discussing with foreign media. It was, last week, a bit hopeful that there was now a ray of light and a change for the better.
Bastards doing this.

Forester1 · 20/09/2023 20:44

It’s dreadful. Those of us who live in Britain have plenty of gripes but it doesn’t compare. I just don’t see how the situation will change. 😟

DuesToTheDirt · 20/09/2023 21:17

Nasty and frightening.

A couple of months ago I was looking at holidays and came across a number of women-only trips to Iran. Now lots of potential holiday destinations have political or other issues that might make you think twice, but I thought, Iran? For women? Seriously? I think only Afghanistan would be lower on my list.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 20/09/2023 21:40

I would love to visit Iran one day. But now? No way. Not while it's like this.

If you're on Facebook, there was an incredible post-series last week by a man who was a politician in Iran before, during and (briefly) after the revolution. A fascinating picture of the country as it was before, and how turned in the direction it is now.

Clymene · 20/09/2023 21:46

The Islamic revolution has been disastrous for women. But the women who are casting off their hijabs today are the daughters of these women in the photo. Women who wore what they liked and thought they were on track to become a 'westernised' modern society where women were moving toward equality.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 20/09/2023 22:19

Similar in Afghanistan - photos from there the 1970s also show women working and studying, in trousers or short skirts, with uncovered hair. Freedom can be lost frighteningly quickly.

Truthlikeness · 20/09/2023 22:20

It's heartbreaking seeing what's happening to women in Iran and that's just watching from afar. I cannot begin to imagine what it's like to live it and the courage it takes to protest.

I recently went to a talk by Angela Saini who wrote "The Patriarchs: How men came to rule," and one thing she said at the end really stuck with me.
She said 'patriarchy is a grift'. It's not natural or inevitable, it's basically something men will do when they can get away with it.

Exactly.

I'm in favour of women freely choosing to dress conservatively if that is genuinely what they want, but being forced to do so under threat of punishment? FUCK NO.

RavingStone · 21/09/2023 10:40

It is simultaneously so tedious and yet so terrifying the lengths men go to to control women.

Note the attempt to cut off world-wide influence too; aimed squarely at younger women online. That must really worry those in power.

Does UK offer automatic asylum to all these women?

We might feel lucky to be in the UK but our institutions are still patriarchal, our rights are still granted at the whim of the same class of human that is oppressing women so badly in Afghanistan and Iran. Things don't always improve for the better especially when the very word "progressive" has had its meaning flipped.

Always amazes me that people who think of themselves as woke in the next breath seem to suggest that western women should shut up about the rights they're losing. As if our men are somehow innately superior.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 21/09/2023 10:44

Hahaha hahaha.

No.

None of which was the case under the tyrant Saddam Hussein.

No, because we have no historic connection to Iraq.

Iranian feminist Samaneh Savadi was interviewed on Women's Hour this morning. Worth a listen (whole episode was very good. So lovely to have Emma back!)

We're talking about Iran (and have added Afghanistan). Not Iraq. Iraq was a typo by 1 PP.

Grammarnut · 21/09/2023 12:29

Sorry and apologise. Asylum ought to be offered.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 21/09/2023 12:38

I believe Iraq isn't great on women's rights - big problems with domestic violence in particular - but is nowhere near Iranian levels of official oppression.
