That you cannot cancel your tv licence if you watch any other streaming service like Amazon Prime, Now Tv etc on a tv or any other device ??

Cos that is what the tvlicensing.Co.uk page is saying, I'll try and screenshot

I thought you could cancel if if you never watched Bbc live or via Iplayer catch up??

If you watch TV live on any channel, not just BBC, you need one.

If you just watch catch up services, not including iplayer, you don't.

RoseslnTheHospital · 15/09/2023 14:35

Yeah, the key word is "live". So you can watch "catch up" or any of the existing library of content on those streaming services. But you can't watch anything that is being streamed live on those services.

Kryten1958 · 15/09/2023 14:39

I cancelled my TV licence years ago. The operative word here is "live". You can watch any streaming service Amazon Prime, Paramount+ etc (except BBC iPlayer) without a TV licence providing the program within the streaming service you are watching is not live, ie it was uploaded to the service in the past and can now be viewed on demand.
So live sport on Amazon Prime no.
Clarkson's farm on Amazon Prime yes!

Worldgonecrazy · 15/09/2023 14:48

Amazon, you tube, net flix, any of the streaming services. Live webcams are a grey area.

A little quirk, is that if a friend visits who has a license, you can both watch live programmes on a mobile device as long as it’s not plugged into a power source. I have no idea where I got that but of information but I remember finding it when I got thoroughly sick of the BBC.

If there is anything I want to watch on iplayer I do it at my parents house.

"Watching TV" includes anything you've recorded incidentally, like from a Virgin box.

Charley50 · 15/09/2023 14:57

What they said..
Also you can legally listen to BBC radio without a TV licence. If you want to after the Roisin Murphy 6 Music scandal.

But you can see above that they say watching Amazon prime, and that is not a love service , and also now tv

Ah ok I see what you mean re love sports on Amazon prime, luckily that doesn't include my watching habits.

Thoroughly sick of BBC and the Roisin Murphy thing was just the last straw for me, gonna cancel now thanks all!

Your screenshot says you won't legally be able to "watch live on streaming services". It doesn't say "watch streaming services", it has the important word "live" in there. The streaming services listed do sometimes have live broadcasted shows, often this is sports. Amazon Prime has had live rugby for example. Without a TV Licence, you could not watch anything on these streaming services that is specified as "Live". But you could happily watch anything that has been previously broadcast and is in the list of available programmes.

This is interesting, I fucking hate the BBC, especially after this Roisin Murphy bollocks, but I want to watch Strictly..but if I watch it on catch up I still have to pay? Ps I only swear when writing about feminist issues....sorry..

dimorphism · 15/09/2023 16:33

As far as I'm aware things like Netflix and Amazon prime don't have live content. Happy to be corrected, but I've only ever seen on demand things on there.

I'm not very into sport, and it probably shows😆

RoseslnTheHospital · 15/09/2023 16:37

I think that watching Strictly excerpts on Youtube wouldn't require a TV licence... but I am not sure about that! It is BBC content, but it is not live and it is not being watched via iPlayer...

I'm not sure about catchup (they make the rules confusing, don't they) I just know that, although I hardly ever watch anything live, I do still need a license because I watch everything recorded from my Virgin box. It's annoying!

IwantToRetire · 15/09/2023 17:40

You need to be covered by a TV Licence to watch programmes live on any online TV service - such as ITVX, Channel 4, Amazon Prime Video, Now or Sky Go. You don't need a TV Licence if you only ever watch on demand programmes on any TV service apart from BBC iPlayer.

A TV Licence covers you to:

  • Watch or record TV on any channel on any TV service (like Sky, Virgin Media and Freeview).
  • Watch live on streaming services (like ITVX, All 4, YouTube and Amazon Prime Video).
  • Use BBC iPlayer*
This applies to any device, including a TV, computer, laptop, phone, tablet, games console or digital box.

If you’re not watching, streaming or recording TV in any of the above ways you dont

(I must admit I didn't know that on demand services dont need a licence, but recording a programme does. Strange - or is it that it was "live" at the time of recording, but on demand isn't live or .... )

Grammarnut · 15/09/2023 21:28

Why would you bother for 40p a day? And it pays for the Proms and Radio 3. Mind, the Proms had EU flags wall to wall (someone was giving them out free) which I object to. Who wants to belong to an undemocratic Fifth Reich which destroys national identity and is corrupt to boot? But I don't blame the BBC for that (however, they are pro EU, which I do object to, but not enough to stop paying the licence fee).

Yes, you’ll have to wait till Boxing Day to cancel your license if you want to watch Strictly (even on catch up on iplayer).

Redebs · 16/09/2023 08:22

If you do decide to give up buying a licence, be prepared for some nasty, bullying tactics by the TV licensing authority.
I have been legitimately without a licence for years and till get occasional threatening letters from them.
