I thought people may be interested to read Brendan O'Neill's excellent article about the disgraceful Guardian review of Roisin Murphy's new album. I really can't get over how sexist it is...Woman says pubert blockers might be bad = what a witch...

The Guardian’s shameful Roisin Murphy review

Of all the smug, bitter things the Guardian has published over the years, its review of Róisín Murphy’s new album has got to be one of the worst. Ms Murphy is a musical genius but a wicked woman, the review essentially says. Why? Because she committed...

Good article, as always.

Datdamndamp · 09/09/2023 12:12

Great article by Brendon. The Guardian article review was revolting.

FineganFineagain · 09/09/2023 12:18

It's the Guardian, what can you expect? Great article by Brendan. Thank goodness for The Spectator and Spiked.

Dabralor · 09/09/2023 12:25

I feel I need to buy this album- I really want to help this woman.

Motnight · 09/09/2023 12:33

Great article, thanks for sign posting to it Op

GCAcademic · 09/09/2023 12:37

It's the Guardian. Absolutely every single thing that is reviewed in their Culture section is assessed according to the values of their puritanical identity politics rather than by any artistic merit it might have.

fabricstash · 09/09/2023 13:48

The guardian has fallen so low

Fenlandia · 09/09/2023 13:57

Such a topsy-turvy world where the Guardian cheerleads sterilising kids and Spiked produce thoughtful articles sticking up for women. But thank you Brendan and co.

Fenlandia · 09/09/2023 13:58

OK this one was the Spectator not Spiked but my point still stands!

teawamutu · 09/09/2023 14:13

Superb piece. What utter cunts the Guardian are.

RealityFan · 09/09/2023 14:19

Does Morrissey get this passive aggression?

Will a lefty rock "journalist" write, wow, his music is great, but his politics, well its like a nasty stain in silk underwear, too bad, I really like it, but the tastemeisters dictate that I must convey what an ABSOLUTE FUCKING SHIT HE IS!

Chrysanthemum5 · 09/09/2023 14:26

@RealityFan Hadley freeman on Twitter made that same point - will male singers/bands now have their 'crimes' mentioned in reviews?

RealityFan · 09/09/2023 14:34

Well Morrissey gets flak, but he's a big boy with a super loyal fanbase, he'll give out flying V signs to all and sundry.

No way you're cancelling any man.

Women, ah, now we're talking. Get them any way you can, even an outed private message will do.

Our gracious betters are realising that they cannot oblige us to accept such anti science and anti humanism, which is why the main emphasis is not the visible froth like JKR and Róisín, it's top down imposed stuff like genderised curriculums in schools and the expansion of DEI everywhere.

If you won't take your medicine willingly by shunning JKR and Róisín and allowing free movement of men everywhere sacred to women, then we can make you take your medicine.

Rudderneck · 09/09/2023 14:36

In my experience, they also assess male musicians according to warped id politics metrics.

Not actual bad stuff, to be clear, but if they tick the right boxes they are unlikely to get a bad review, even if it's shallow derivative shit.

NotTerfNorCis · 10/09/2023 00:19

The review is strangely written. Its sections on the music itself are full of verbal flourishes, but the part attacking Murphy's political views is leaden and plain. Snapes clearly loves the album, and maybe spent a long time crafting a response to it - then had to tack on this diatribe before the article went to press.

TottieIsTottie · 10/09/2023 15:07

I am not a fan of this type of enraged article even if I agree on principle.

I agree the original review is very odd and it also misses the point. The painful contradiction of wanting a fantasy and coming to accept your authentic self seems completely in alignment with RM's recently publicised comments. It seems like she knows what she's talking about.

Crouton19 · 10/09/2023 15:59

I got that sense too. The review may have been written some weeks ago when preview copies were sent out and then some quick updating was required/demanded.

AgnesX · 10/09/2023 16:03

I love Roisin (and her point of view) but not the album at all. On the back of all the fuss had a good listen.

I still have time for her earlier stuff just not this. Missing the point I know.

AnxiousPangolin · 10/09/2023 16:08

I was furious at that review. An absolutely disgraceful move on the part of the Guardian. I really want to buy Roisin’s album to show solidarity but aren’t her record company donating proceeds to trans charities?

nettie434 · 10/09/2023 16:18

but aren’t her record company donating proceeds to trans charities?

According to The Guardian, that's not been confirmed. The ultimate in holier than thou cancel culture: say you're going to do something but don't actually do it. The shock is that Roisin Murphy's comments aren't even particularly controversial. The manufacturers of puberty blockers must be delighted that they have so many supporters who don't even bother with checking the evidence.

No, that was a lie by either a "journalist" or their source. Confirmed by Róisín Murphy herself in a quote posted by @WarriorN on page 30 of the other thread here.

AnxiousPangolin · 10/09/2023 16:52

Great, thanks for confirming! I tried to read that thread but it kept crashing so I missed that.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 10/09/2023 17:09

Her music's not really my sort of thing, but I've listened to the new album as a tiny resistance to the witch hunt. I cancelled my subscription to the Grauniad when Hadley Freeman left, otherwise I'd be doing that too.

From the paper that uncritically promoted The Family Sex Show, as well!? Who'd have thought!
