John Boyne properly nails his colours to the madt

It’s taken a while but well done John.

”A really smart piece by Brendan O'Neill for
@spikedonline.
The people who are currently trying to destroy @roisinmurphy's life & career for defending vulnerable children are mirror images of those who tried to destroy Sinéad's life & career 30 years ago.

Self-appointed moral arbiters and men's right activists who cannot bear the idea of a woman's voice being heard.

For me, this story is the straw that broke the camel's back.

I am no longer going to stay silent on the way that women are treated.

I will defend women's rights, children's rights, gay rights, and lesbian rights to my dying day. I will also defend trans rights.

But I will not defend the online activists who are neither gay, lesbian or trans but who exploit the lives of LGBT people simply to earn followers in the hope of giving themselves a voice in the world and, in time, monetising that.

If that costs me readers or my career, so be it.

On June 9th 1954, at a Congressional hearing, Joseph Welch said to Senator Joe McCarthy: "You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency?"

I would ask the same question of the people who are trying to destroy the life of a woman who has done nothing - NOTHING - but suggest that vulnerable children should be protected.

You have done enough, all of you. Have you no sense of decency?”

The strength of that apology!

Rare and remarkable.

Truly.

I couldn't find the apology, and I'm quite nosy like that. Also, he has the same name as my late dad, which always makes me pay attention when he's mentioned.

That apology is amazing. I also see Elizabeth Buchan (an author I like) has replied in agreement to the twitter link in OP post.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 05/09/2023 07:55

Wow. That is some apology.

I hope it makes some of the fence sitters and the ‘ oh it’s not really a problem, or if it is, it doesn’t affect many people (aka cowards) think about their own consciences.

MadEyeJudy · 05/09/2023 07:59

I've just read his novel 'The Echo Chamber' which is a satire on the absurdity & disproportionate nature of cancel culture. Worth a read! I see Emily Maitlis has re tweeted (re 'X'd?!) His statement regarding Sinead & Roisin which is interesting too. The apology to Glinner must have taken a huge amount of balls so kudos to him.

GrandmaMazur · 05/09/2023 08:01

That’s how to write an apology.

BezMills · 05/09/2023 08:01

Many thanks @TheSummerITurnedChubby

That is a proper apology

PriOn1 · 05/09/2023 08:01

That is a proper, genuine apology, and how different from the phony statements made by those forced to capitulate to gender ideologists for heresy.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 05/09/2023 08:10

Thats a fantastic apology

FrancescaContini · 05/09/2023 08:16

Thanks for posting this. I haven’t read his books but for the love of God, can someone take a firm position on an issue without a forensic examination of everything they’ve ever written/said?

FrancescaContini · 05/09/2023 08:17

Emily Maitlis absolutely gets it. ❤️ that woman.

FrancescaContini · 05/09/2023 08:18

It’s fantastic.

elgreco · 05/09/2023 08:19

Great apology.
And " the boy in the stripped pyjamas" was a story not a textbook.

RoyalCorgi · 05/09/2023 08:23

That is a proper, gracious apology. I'm glad. I remember feeling so furious at that article he wrote for the Irish Times, and I'm fairly sure we had a discussion about it on here at the time.

Perhaps his apology will inspire others to follow suit.

And maybe the one good thing to come out of this Roisin Murphy business is that it will finally open people's eyes to what exactly is going on with this movement.

FrancescaContini · 05/09/2023 08:24

(I’m referring to the apology. So few people know how to or genuinely want to apologise; a heartfelt apology is a rare thing, so kudos to JB)

GCSister · 05/09/2023 08:24

Fabulous 👏👏

Has she spoken out before? I'm really excited about this. We'll done that woman.

The sinead/roisin article: fucking brilliant.

FrancescaContini · 05/09/2023 08:29

@napody not directly, I don’t think, but she was the Newsnight presenter who interviewed both Susie Green and Keira Bell a couple of years ago. She really challenged SG, rather than fawned.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 05/09/2023 08:32

A great apology. This is what crossing that golden bridge looks like.

Dramatico · 05/09/2023 08:32

That is a great apology, utterly sincere.

@NitroNine your post was excellent food for thought and really reiterated to me how JK Rowling (and, indeed, female authors and artists in general) are simply never given the benefit of the doubt in the same way men are.

fairislecable · 05/09/2023 08:36

MadEyedJudy I am listening to The Echo Chamber on audible, it is absolutely spot on with regard to social Media etc. Truly a laugh out loud book.

I have already decided to read more of his books, and that apology is amazing, a true rarity in todays aggressive life.

Lottapianos · 05/09/2023 08:41

'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is actually hugely problematic'

It's one of the worst books I've ever read. I cringed all the way through. Your description is spot on

Bloody good for him for this latest statement though

And I love Emily Maitlis too so great to hear that she's supporting him

I'm glad you're enjoying it !! It's certainly not subtle 😁. I would whole heartedly recommend the 'Hearts invisible Furies' as a beautifully written book but quite different to this one. (carefully proof reads so not accidentally written 'furries'!😁)

Boiledbeetle · 05/09/2023 08:53

It was good to see that apology last night, it put me in a happy mood before bed!

Let's hope Johns apology to Glinner causes others to reflect on how they have treated him over the last few years.
