Rimmel is at it now

I've just been searching Boots website for make up and Rimmel nail polish is sporting a Tom Daley range 🙄 I'd rather cosmetics not be using baby buyers to sell their stuff. Is there any brand that isn't captured by misogynists in action? The list of ones to avoid grows longer by the week. I just want to shop without political no sense on branding. Is that too much to ask?

Your point?

BCBird · 01/09/2023 20:42

I mean why do we need Tom Daley to promote what is mainly for women?

Dotcheck · 01/09/2023 20:43

For heaven’s sake, men/ boys have been wearing nail varnish for decades.
This is not an issue

BCBird · 01/09/2023 20:44

I fed up.of the pseudo eradication of women, terms traditionally associated with women etc. I am.waiting to find myself in a women's toilet with a trans man- I am hoping I have the nerve to call them.out

BCBird · 01/09/2023 20:45

We can agree to differ.

A trans man?
Why? I thought most people on here would be fine with a trans man in the toilet as "can usually tell" and "born female?"
That's the usual stance anyway, aware not a hive mind blah blah...

True, definitely not just a woman thing!
Like eyeliner on blokes yum
Not getting the "eradicating women" stance when it's always been for both.

MrsFButton · 01/09/2023 21:01

I think it's great that they have a male promoting a nail polish range without him identifying as a woman. I understand the objection to the surrogacy but is anyone calling for e.g. Kim K not to promote stuff based on her benefitting from surrogacy?

happydappy2 · 01/09/2023 21:11

I agree that people who buy babies are not aspirational. In the future many young adults will talk of their trauma, of knowing they were purchased.

CervixSampler · 01/09/2023 21:21

I think men promoting make up/nail varnish is great. My young ds likes his toe nails painted in the summer. My objection is the using a baby buyer to promote anything. I can't comment on the kardashian woman as I don't really know who she is but (reality tv?) but TD has been on my radar as the renter of wombs and the nail varnishes are part of a rainbow flag range so yet more rainbow virtue signalling by a brand.

I suspect pp is not all that familiar with gender newspeak and understands "trans man" the way it should logically be applied - a man identifying as the opposite sex.

Just to make it perfectly clear - a ‘transman’ is a female who identifies as a man. A ‘transwoman’ is a male who identifies as a woman.

Transmen are fine in women’s spaces (as they are natal female).
Males who ‘feel like’ women are not fine in female spaces (as they are in no way female).

HellonHeels · 02/09/2023 05:58

Can't stand TD and his "TWAW unless I want to buy a baby and then suddenly I recognise the reality of biology" utter misogynistic bullshit.

FriendsDrinkBook · 02/09/2023 06:21

I think TD is an utter twit , but I couldn't get wound up about a man endorsing nail polish. The product is for both sexes.

What's your problem with someone with a vagina using the female loos?

KnightonShiningArmour · 02/09/2023 06:47

Great message from Rimmel about non-conformity. I don’t agree with surrogacy either but if he’s showing young men it’s fine to wear nail varnish and not identify out of your male sex then it’s all cool with me.

womenarehuman · 02/09/2023 07:35

Tom Daley was actually appointed the Global Brand Ambassador for Rimmel as whole, not just for the nail polish line(s). According to GQ, he was expecting a lot of pushback and upset, so much so that he did a little preventative song and dance about it, but so far there hasn't really been any substantive negative reaction.

Of course men wear makeup - the article talks about foundation and shows him demoing that and talking about how it's great to use as spot concealer. And as someone mentioned already, loads of men are professional makeup artists and have been advertising makeup brands and looks on the strength of their professional expertise for decades.

HOWEVER, the context is tricky because (1) a male brand ambassador for a traditional, long-standing makeup brand that has previously advertised and catered almost exclusively to women customers is a(nother) example of a man being lauded (and handsomely paid) for something women have been and to a great extent still are expected to do and punished for not doing. And (2) there's still a gap in professional and financial opportunities for women as a group vs for men as a group, so the situation of a man picking up one of the limited number of lucrative opportunities traditionally almost exclusively available to women sits a little uncomfortably. (Rimmel could have probably have minimized Issue 2 by making him one of a group of Brand Ambassadors).

It's great to expand boundaries, but it needs to be as part of a coherent program of addressing and redressing systemic and structural sex-based inequalities, not just a sparkly Union Jack band-aid.

FroodwithaKaren · 02/09/2023 07:49

No it's not a woman thing.

It's a band wagon supposedly cool and groovy thing currently however to make it clear that typically women's products on men is so much cooler and better than on mere women.

Which makes me shrug and walk away from the product. Retailers, just sell me the bloody item and leave your mucky political hobby horses at home.

AlisonDonut · 02/09/2023 07:51

I genuinely don't care if they want to use a man to advertise their products.

I do care that they choose Tom Daly who pretends he doesn't know what a woman is until he needs one to gestate a child for him.

But I don't buy any Rimmel products in the first place.

Stillabitbroken · 02/09/2023 08:21

I don't object to men wearing nail varnish- lots of my male students wear it so it makes sense for Rimmel to market their products to men too. I try not to buy celebrity endorsed products in general as I hate the idea of paying big bucks to people who are obviously paid to "like" a product!

Absolutely loads, Kim K is vile and has been called out a lot from what I've seen so not sure of your point 🤷‍♀️

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/09/2023 08:36

Another example of bigotry via low standards. It seems simply being lgbt is enough to get you " work" so to speak. And it never seems to matter what they have done or said and how nasty, misogynistic, offensive etc it is. Yet women would be held to much higher standards.

I dont think anyone engaging in the purchase of babies and exploiting women should be given the time of day. But he's gay so who cares 🙄 he can do what he wants and still be brave and stunning.

NitroNine · 02/09/2023 08:44

I misread the title & thought someone had tried Queering Rommel.

Having read thread, am now imagining Rommel as Rimmel brand ambassador in 1930s/40s &/or in a couple of years some horrendous AI Rommel doing the job.
