The Body Shop

The DT has an article about the problems The Body Shop is having. Whilst it is no doubt right that it has had troubel finding its way post-Anita Roddick, I do wonder how much pissing off many women in their 40s and 50s who loved it as teenagers but don't believe in gender identity or some of their other political stances has affected them.

I have not bought a single thing since they mocked JK Rowling for standing up for women. It was my go-to place for small pressents for women and teenage girls. I bought stuff for me there too. Now not only do I not buy there any more DC and MIL know I won't shop there and have stopped buying me things from there too.

Gender is not mentioned in the article but many of the comments point it out as an issue.

"Amid dwindling sales and profits, the chain’s Brazilian owners Natura & Co are considering selling it off – just six years after buying it for €1bn from French beauty house L’Oreal.

“It is no exaggeration to say that 2022 was the most difficult year in the history of The Body Shop,” Natura & Co, which also owns beauty business Avon, said in its most recent annual report. “An extraordinary set of external factors significantly disrupted the business.”"

Why The Body Shop can’t blame the economy for what went wrong

The retailer is finding it difficult to stand out amid competition from rivals such as Rituals and Lush

Thought I would just pop a little reminder.

I would spend a lot off money in both the Body Shop and Lush - as I have 7 nieces, and this was always on birthday and Christmas lists. I let them know why I would not be buying from them - none of them now use these shops now.

Please don't forget NEVER to buy Dove products either.

When I think about what JKR wrote about her experiences of abuse, and this being what the Body Shop felt was an appropriate response... Makes me furious all over again. Utter WANKERS.

Never forget.

Shortpoet · 31/08/2023 08:51

shortly before the JKR tweet, I’d taken DD to Body Shop to choose some moisturiser. I thought it would be a nice “first brand” based on my fond teenage memories and she liked choosing from all the different scents.

Since the JKR tweet we just walk straight past any time we see in town. Not sorry.

I will also never buy from them again

Actions have consequences and I am enjoying them facing their consequences

Yep, me too!

Also boycotted because this is what you get when you enter 'women' ( or 'woman') in the search box:

The Body Shop
Pudmyboy · 31/08/2023 12:33

But put 'man' in the search box (colour me surprised):

Used to go in all the time (and Lush) never been in since the JK Rowling debacle .. would be interesting to know how much business they lost. They really love pissing off older women.

TrainedByCats · 31/08/2023 13:14

I’m another that has also boycotted Body shop since that appalling tweet (and lack of apology to her).

JulesJules · 31/08/2023 13:37

I replied to that tweet from the Body Shop (along with thousands of others, all critical from what I could see) and have boycotted ever since. It was where I used to spend my Saturday job money when I was a student (Japanese Musk, banana conditioner, hemp moisturiser, those fabulous eyeshadow crayons) and then presents, stocking fillers for the DDs etc. Likewise Lush who I also (like PPs) remember from the Cosmetics To Go days. I must have spent hundreds of pounds, we probably all have. Amazing really that retailers are so prepared to piss off their customers and lose all those sales.

Maerchentante · 31/08/2023 15:55

I was never much of a BodyShop person, mostly due to the fact that the closest to my German hometown was 50km and an hour on the train away.
Spent loads in Lush, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel ~£90 every quarter plus items for my sister as gifts. Not bought anything there in a good three years.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 31/08/2023 16:23

The Body Shop emailed me a survey (well over a year ago now) saying they'd noticed I wasn't shopping there or reading my emails, and that they'd like to know why.

I certainly filled that survey in!

BabyStopCryin · 31/08/2023 16:27

I haven’t shopped with them for ages. I tailed off when they were sold to L’Oreal, then full body swerve when they went woowoo (and that was for the whole family shampoo, conditioner, soaps, shaving stuff, smellies, not to mention Christmas boxes).

The last time I went onto one I was having a really crappy day and was chatting to the sales guy and he gave me loads of samples and little bottles to ‘cheer me up’.

However the adverts inside were all about how politicians were mostly old white guys and why young folk should be running the show… I asked if they were still collecting signatures against animal testing and he said they were (made me sad as I remember collecting signatures for the AVL when I was at school, so it’s still happening I guess).

Lush can take a running jump. Their revolting promos too - naked under their lobbies and inviting customers to kiss them anywhere - what the hell? And their stuff stinks, dues kids and baths (Little Blue, anyone?), clogs the plughole with confetti, gets glitter stuck up your unmentionables and stinks. That plus the very overkeen staff chasing you around the store like they are on a million % commission.

BabyStopCryin · 31/08/2023 16:28

*lobbies = pinnies

RealityFan · 31/08/2023 16:33

Its really amazing. Whole books were written on the Ratners episode, seminars on how not to fuck it up.

Now, company after company commits business suicide, seemingly unable to learn from the last, seemingly proud to piss off their long term solid customer base.

Its too systemic to be isolated examples, the Diversity Index underpins all these companies deliberate acts of Hara Kiri.

Pinkpots · 31/08/2023 16:36

Yup karma’s a bitch, be nasty about women and women don’t want to buy from you. Who would have thought it! Used to be a regular shopper and my DH liked their face wash he’s had to get used to one from another shop.

Pinkpots · 31/08/2023 16:38

Oh and Lush can gtf as well.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 31/08/2023 16:39

I'm afraid I still buy all my products from Bodyshop, but I don't know where else would be comparable for natural products - specifically Oils of Life - if anyone can recommend similar I would appreciate it.

I find Upcircle products brilliant for my dry old skin.

you are taught about Ratner on marketing postgrads!

Ratner is now so passe. Can't compare to Bud Light, Target, Costa, and now Body Shop.

SilverCatStripes · 31/08/2023 16:58

I used to be a big fan of The Body Shop and stopped buying their products after the JKR insult.

Nice to see I am good company!

BabyStopCryin · 31/08/2023 16:58

At least Gerald held his hands up and admitted his gaff. He even jokes about himself. And it was his company!

Can you imagine the head of Body Shop admitting "We really got it wrong on JKR, and insulted our wonderful female customers, and we're really sorry. Please forgive us"?

No, neither can I.

The Corporate Equity Diversity Index absolutely prohibits that.

Even worse, these people are so far gone down the rabbit hole of virtue signalling, they're less sorry for going bust than ever serving such a bunch of phobes.
