I want to live here.

I’m 59. Married. But if he popped his clogs, this is where I’d like to live. There needs to be more of these across the country.

‘We have brothers, sons, lovers – but they can’t live here!’ The happy home shared by 26 women

With residents aged from 58 to 94, New Ground is the UK’s first cohousing community exclusively for older women. Setting it up was an 18-year battle – but with soaring numbers of people living alone, is this an idea whose time has come?

I've already discussed doing this with friends when we are older. Bring on the commune! 🤣

RoyalCorgi · 24/08/2023 10:03

They have a policy of admitting trans women, though, don't they?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/08/2023 10:05

I don’t know about the trans stuff.

I just want to live like that with lots of women. Not in a Mcarthy and Stone nightmare.

I just read this and passed it on to my friends. I had discussed doing this with friends before, (I’m still happily married but who knows what life will bring). It looks fabulous. And everyone there looks so amazing - I wonder is it due to them all supporting each other to thrive?

I’m surprised there are so few Co-living spaces - I have believed for years that it is the answer to aging. I’m very invested in solutions to this as my family have all lived to a very old age - across generations.

Looks good for people who like people. Personally I'll be building a yurt somewhere in the very remotest region of the UK I can find. I may be some time.

GarlicGrace · 24/08/2023 10:47

I live in bog-standard HA retirement housing. I'm surprisingly asocial here - made some efforts in the first couple of years, but just didn't find my neighbours very interesting. Most of them are super-social, though; they're always hanging out in each other's back yards and having very loud, repetitive conversations with each other 😬

Sharing anything more than the lawn & the laundry room would drive me nuts!

ApocalipstickNow · 24/08/2023 10:51

I just want to live in a little house in the woods like a witch and the cats can eat me when I die if they need to.

On an island with quokkas? Will there be room for all us though????

BetsyBobbins · 24/08/2023 11:15

Where do I sign? I'm 51 and would LOVE to live in a place like this, my absolute dream.

I've actually talked to a friend about this, that when we finally get rid of our bot so nice husbands we'll buy a house together and live together in peace at last.

BetsyBobbins · 24/08/2023 11:17

But do they admit trans women? Eugh, hard no

Same, but a brick built building of some sort. I like solid walls around me. And a door I can lock.
I've seen some in the farther reaches of Scotland that will be just fine. Only thing that might stop me is all the current things medically going wrong with me.

Wouldn't an archipelago be better? With varios sized islands so those who want a cabin on their own could have the small ones, and the more clubbable could have a collection of dwellings / large shared house on the larger ones, with a communal space for all who wanted it?

Somewhere temperate with few storms and easy access to the mainland for supplies and services.

ArabeIIaScott · 24/08/2023 11:59

A remote archipelago filled with quokkas, cats, chinchillas and pigeons sounds pretty good to me.

Helleofabore · 24/08/2023 12:06

Ok. I am for an archipelago! But Arabella, will the cats scare the pigeons and chinchillas???? Or are you limiting it to chinchilla cats?

Probably, to avoid being firebombed, and maybe they’ll have to go through the pain of having to live with a TW. But 58-94 no TW thinks there’s any realistic chance of compelling validation out of them, just not gonna happen.

Chersfrozenface · 24/08/2023 12:12

I just googled "where can I buy an archipelago?"

Ye gods, you should see how many sites there are selling / advertising private islands!

Presumably we could confine each species to a separate island? And then do visits. We could reserve one island for those who wish to be quietly eaten and populate it with the particularly grumpy cats.

Just look out for that, because if it's anything like ebay, you order an archipelago and a week later get some grubby rocks in a paddling pool.

Helleofabore · 24/08/2023 12:32

Good idea! Separate the species so we don't have any interspecies deaths and we can do visits. I like it.

IwantToRetire · 24/08/2023 16:01

Someone posted this on another forum the following point.

Its great if you've got personal money or enough assets to get a loan, but without saying it is the same as an actual gated community, this is only a housing solution for a very few.

And is having wealth enough of a shared community outlook to make you feel you are part of that community?!

Annasgirl · 24/08/2023 17:05

@IwantToRetire , they have Local Authority units - it is one of the reasons it took them so long, in order to have social
housing , they had to jump through lots of hoops!!!

IwantToRetire · 24/08/2023 17:14

it is one of the reasons it took them so long, in order to have social housing

Are you sure it is that way round?

Usually builders only get planning permission to build if they commit to x number of units being affordable housing. And more often than not after building works are complete the LA agrees to reduce the number because of increaesed costs, blah, blah.

Also, "affordable" housing means rents at something like 80% of commercial rents, which (particularly London) means unaffordable rents.

Affordable rents are not the same as social housing rents.
