It's a small step but significant.

BREAKING
@BACP has belatedly acknowledged that its members who hold and express gender critical beliefs are protected under the law. Its recent version of legal guidance to members confirms the outcome of the Forstater judgement of 2021, but without referring to the latter by name. Forstater decided that gender critical beliefs constituted a protected belief under the Equality Act 2010. BACP now confirm this in their updated version of Equality, diversity and inclusion in the counselling professions. Good Practice in Action 108: Legal Resource. This states that protected beliefs under the law include: “gender critical beliefs (including a belief that sex is immutable and should not be conflated with gender identity).”

I was just coming here to see if someone had posted yet. A rather reluctant admission, I suspect, but an important one.

For those that can't see past the first tweet, there is a screenshot below of the follow on tweets.

I don't think BCAP are going to be happy.

Those follow on tweets are really powerful.

Another brick being removed from this awful wall. But how painful to see organisations that should naturally centre safeguarding and wellbeing being in this position where they're having to be forced to behave ethically.

RealityFan · 21/08/2023 18:07

More evidence that 2023 is proving to be the watershed.

Like all therapy, there's a point where it's really painful ahead of making progress.

This is therapy itself going thru that phase.

PatatiPatatras · 21/08/2023 19:31

Good point. What comes after the painful trial of a different way? Painful realisation hopefully? Or more "I can't do it" tantrums first?

A relief to know it is legal to 'believe' that I am a woman, even if I play football and dont wear make up. Reminds me of poor Galileo's 'belief' that the earth was a globe.
I think the gender critical though suggests judgement of the person themselves who have taken on board that they can change their sex and have chosen that path. I am not critical of the people themselves.

When kids say they are trans is a great support for parents who are worried.
It would be good if you could ask for it in the library. Strangely, anything that challenges the gender ideology disappears from the shelves. And there is nothing put in LGBT etc section.

I’m so so happy to see this. I’m a therapist and have had to keep my gender critical beliefs below the radar. I had been feeling really despondent about how captured my industry is. This gives me hope that the tide is turning and it’s time for us to be able to have our sat in public without fear of losing our profession

ArabeIIaScott · 24/08/2023 20:20

Good.

Interesting, the CBT person I used had a very unfiltered set of opinions, including a very damning verdict on a training day laid on by Mermaids. Indeed it was her feedback from this that was a big part of me seeing the wider picture, as a therapist myself.

I'd say she had no fear expressing forthright logical opinions that could be seen as GC.
