Go Lionesses!

The game hasn't started yet so fingers crossed!

What a massive achievement for this squad of talented female athletes! Let's hope these great role models inspire other women and girls, young and old, to pursue their sporting goals 😀

When I was in secondary school, about 14-15, a group of girls, including me, asked to do football, not netball or hockey. We were told no. The male PE teachers wouldn't do it and the female PE teachers said they weren't allowed as they weren't qualified.

Eventually, a younger male PE teacher agreed to teach us at lunchtimes. This is despite reputedly having a younger girl already playing for a local big-name club.

When I walked through school (cheeky shortcut) as an 18 yo, the 1st year boys and girls were playing football together in the lesson 😀

Things change and they do progress 😀

Go Lionesses!!!

I think England will win. Hope its a good game!

I hope England win!

Mid 1970s I was firmly told by male PE teacher, 'girls do NOT play football', the female teacher said 'don't be ridiculous, stop trying to pretend to be a boy'

I’m Scottish, not really that fussed about football, and I hope England win. Go on yersel, Lionesses 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏆!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/08/2023 11:04

I'm not English and I have no interest in football, but I've got the game on. Whoever wins, what a huge boost for women's sport, and much needed, given how many girls give up on sport during their teens, with lifelong implications for good health and fitness.

A male friend told me the other day that he no longer bothers much with men's football because it's so toxic and commercialised. He thinks the women's game is much more interesting and enjoyable to watch.

guinnessguzzler · 20/08/2023 11:07

Watching from Scotland with the kids. We're all very excited. I think England will do it but either way they should all be very proud of themselves.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 20/08/2023 11:11

As an aside, I live very close to the stadium of both a major Scottish football team and the national rugby stadium- since the Lionesses won UEFA there has been a notable uptick in the amount of advertising and attendance of the women’s matches. It’s lovely to see excited wee girls going along in their shirts, usually with their dads.

jays · 20/08/2023 11:56

I’m Scottish and I’m rooting for them! Come on Lionesses and and pull it back! I’d love to see them win!

AlanJohnsonsBeamer · 20/08/2023 12:00

I'm feeling very proud of the lionesses just getting to where they are! Women are incredible, they really are.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 20/08/2023 12:03

I'm Northern Irish and cheering the Lionesses on. What a fantastic achievement for them! I do hope they win!

Just to clarify, I don’t mean I wouldn’t be rooting for England, I always do once Scotland are out, if we even get in! I mean it’s just so bloody brilliant that it’s on my radar to be watching! We’ve come a long way in football!

AnneShirleysNewDress · 20/08/2023 12:36

Also watching from Scotland. Still hoping they can pull it back.

BettyFilous · 20/08/2023 12:39

I lost patience with the preamble and wandered off to get on with some chores. DS is giving updates from next room. I will say how refreshing it was to see an all female commentating team and not a whiff of Gary Lineker.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 20/08/2023 12:44

Hope they win but its not looking good

ACatCalledPushka · 20/08/2023 14:54

So we lost the game but thousands of girls will have been inspired by the World Cup. And that’s a win for women’s sport.

ZeldaFighter · 20/08/2023 14:57

Yep and Spain played beautifully, to give them their dues. Lots of inspiring women being shown as the role models they are - players, coaches, referees, commentators, TV presenters etc 😀

My mate texted from a pub. Said it was the first time watching a football match when there were more women present than me. It has changed things.

Seeing as this is in Women's rights, spare a thought for Guijarro, Leon, and Pina today. These three players from Las 15 (the fifteen players who complained about Vilda's treatment of them) did not capitulate and "apologise for forgiveness" from the RFEF. They stepped down from the national team/did not put themselves up for selection because Vilda allegedly treated young players like children checking their purchases and having doors open until midnight; as well as general conditions for the team lacking parity - perhaps wrt the latter, La Roja's victory may lead to better conditions - but these three woman will be unlikely to play internationally again.

MotherOfCatBoy · 20/08/2023 15:22

Watched from a pub with friend and her daughter - none of us are into football and we’re Welsh but it was just SO good to see women players, women ref and officials etc! Pub was full and I could hear three blokes standing near us at the bar chatting about the match exactly as if it were a male one - commenting on fouls, ref decisions, ball play etc. It was just all so damn refreshing.
In fact @SequinsandStiIettos the only weird thing was the camera shots of Vilda who seemed out of place in the whole thing. I don’t mean they should only have female coaches (I imagine it might be difficult to find enough at the right level but that might change now?) but it was just jarring after seeing women everywhere in every role. Sad that male fuckwittery should spoil their triumph.

Yes - I agree. They sacrificed a lot.

Abhannmor · 20/08/2023 19:34

Bloke here . What a brilliant tournament and a very good final. Spain were better but didn't walk away from England. A few fouls but that's inevitable. No harassment of the ref. No racism or violence in the crowd. How refreshing.

Ps Women's tennis is better too imo. Especially Ons Jabeur. Haven't seen a male player like her since Ken Rosewall. That dates me.

Heliotroper · 21/08/2023 16:45

In my lifetime, I have seen many great women athletes but team sports have always lagged a long way behind the men's. It is really great that is changing as team sports are so much more than the individuals involved, fans really become part of the culture and anyone can join in and feel part of the team.
