Feminism: Sex and gender discussions
MrsOvertonsWindow · 07/08/2023 17:35

Thank you for this OP. The power that men who claim to be women have had in recent years is quite staggering. It's so helpful to see it laid out like this.

duc748 · 07/08/2023 17:56

That's a really good piece which does clarify the issues.

"Information Commissioner’s Office has a detailed 35-page policy about what to do if they receive correspondence from someone with a GRC (the instructions include putting any paper correspondence inside a sealed envelope and marking it “Official Sensitive — Protected Information”, putting that inside another sealed envelope marked “Official — Sensitive”, putting that package into a particular locked filing cabinet and then telling the official who is designated to receive this information). "

The law really is an ass.

It does help explain why organisations are so deranged about the genderborg.

Violate a cross dressers true male identity and receive an unlimited fine.
Let a cross dressing man violate a woman, no problem.

Boiledbeetle · 07/08/2023 18:33

That a good article by Maya! If not rather depressing in it showing what a complete mess it all is.

Such a powerful point. So much of this enshrines the rights of dodgy men to breach the boundaries of girls and women. Reversing this so that safeguarding once again becomes the priority is critical.

duc748 · 07/08/2023 18:39

Is there any movement towards scrapping this (it seems to me) pointless, and indeed, outdated law?

So, you can get one of these certificates. But nobody's allowed to ask you if you have one or not. But never mind, you don't need one anyway.

Have it got it right?

I'm not depressed. While it does show what a mess it is, the article also shows a sensible path out without falling foul of the ECHR.

ArabeIIaScott · 07/08/2023 20:30

Highly informative, thanks.

' Article 8: “Everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence.'

The fucking male default written into the law itself may offer a clue as to why this ridiculous law got made.

Maya says Kafkaesque - it's Joseph Heller I thought of when reading about the nuclear-level secrecy. If there's one thing government loves, it's pointless and convoluted regulations.

IcakethereforeIam · 07/08/2023 21:24

And this is the mess we're in with only 5,000 of the wretched things.

TBF the use of 'his' isn't the embedding of the male default. It is a feature of language in that in English the gender of a possessive pronoun relates to the owner but in most European languages it relates to the object.

I do agree with the Joseph Heller reference only it isn't Catch 22, its Catch 69. If they don't fuck you going forward, they'll fuck you twice as bad coming back.

One of the best articles on the GRA I have read so far. Explains the absurd behaviour and policies of many organisations.

IcakethereforeIam · 08/08/2023 10:08

Just to be clear, my pp 'wretched things' refers to the certificate themselves and not the people holding them....whoever they may be.

Was that written by the Monty Python team? It would be hilarious if only it wasn’t now being forced on us.

A really important article that goes a long way to explaining why the UK has de facto self-id.

Yes and fairly recently it's become my lifes mission to rid us all of this stupid act. Its pointless and should never have been enacted.
Acts and laws are repealed often, didnt labour repeal about 200 ancient acts last time they were In power? Made 600 more or something, but definitely repealed plenty.

Once I think enough people are interested, I'll set up a petition if there isnt already one. See if we can get enough signatures.

There has been, but it didn't get enough. There needs to be more consciousness raising with the general public. Repealing this law is seen as extreme, because people naively believe that the GRA is gatekept strongly.

ArabeIIaScott · 08/08/2023 19:44

Alternatively or in addition, we can write to parliamentarians and ask them why this nonsense is on the law books. They don't need a petition to repeal a law.

Very true.
I shall get writing then, probably tomorrow. I've fallen and bloody hurt myself and am feeling frail and a bit old. Once upon a time I would have shrugged this off, now I feel like a 90 year old.

A really important article that goes a long way to explaining why the UK has de facto self-id.

The rest of the explanation is the TRA-propagated misconstruing of the single sex exemptions. As I understand it, you can exclude males with a GRC from women's single sex spaces and services if it is a proportionate means to achieve a legitimate aim - eg safety, privacy and dignity. And toilets, refuges etc are given as examples in the EA2010. But organisations have been told that the test of being a proportionate means etc is such a high legal bar that it will be almost impossible to reach and so they should err on the side of caution and never exclude males who claim to be women.
The Haldane judgement throws a spanner in the works because the effect of it would be that you couldn't exclude males who are legally women/female, even though theoretically you could still exclude males without a GRC.

I'd be grateful if any passing lawyers could tell me if I have got any of that wrong.

Douglas Adams, I think. The filing cabinet is in a disused toilet behind a door marked 'Beware of the Leopard'.

Ooh pretty cake and sympathy. What more could a 50 year old going on 90 ask for.

I am a bit shaken, very sore, bruised to fuck and achy. I will however survive.

Who is making the giant mug of tea to go with this cake? Isnt me, I can hardly move.
Cheers boiled, cake and marbella.
I'd put my feet up but a damn dog is in the way. Blast him.
