Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Social Media Discourse after the demise of Twitter...

JaukiVexnoydi · 02/08/2023 21:58

As twitter slowly spirals towards the grave and various new social media platforms jostle for precidence, where will be a good place to migrate to?

Twitter had its ups and downs - far too quick to ban and shadow-ban us for wrongthink and obviously those who didn't want to hear us would just block us and lalalala we're not listening... but it was still possible to call out idiocy and publicise the things that needed shouting about in the struggle for womens rights.

For years, the extent to which something was trending on twitter has been taken by journalists and politicians to be reflective of the balance of public opinion, and so everywhere the default "interact with us on social media" buttons are for facebook and twitter - but eventually with the decline and fall of these empires new logos will take these prime spots and be the go-to locations for public discourse. What will those be? Wherever they are, it is important to ensure that womens voices are there, heard, and not deferring to prioritise being emotionally supportive to males at the expense of womens safety. So where are you heading and which channels can I subscribe to to hear GC news?

Following… got banned from twitter and would like to keep up to date.

@Sexnotgender I always had two entirely independent twitter accounts - one to post stuff on and which got blocked by people who didn't like what I said, and one which was a "ghost" account which never liked or posted anything so never got added to anyone's block lists so could always read and keep me informed even if the other wasn't working... But now everyone I know in "Real Life" seems to be exploring other platforms.

Still, twitter claims to have 450million active users so it might be that losing a million or so won't hurt too much.

spinster.xyz would be the obvious choice

(but it is banned from federating by a lot of other servers, as they seem to be even more dedicated to thought policing their users than twitter was)

It's a bit dramatic to refer to the "demise" of Twitter :)
It's still a hugely influential platform and much better since the Wokenazi who thought they owned the place have been provided with actual real life views to think about.

For my work, Mastodon is increasingly the place to go. but I think people are trying out other options too.

Isn't twitter better than it was? It's been on a journey - it's so powerful that with a bit of tinkering with algorhythms and some very biased moderating, and frankly disturbing moderators, it's managed to convince lots of people that you can change sex! I'd stick with twitter though - any new platform will probably go through the same issues or might be worse.

How long were you on Twitter for?

am surprised that any regular there thinks it’s on the decline? It’s become remarkably improved for people who believe that sex is real and that women and girls matter and conversation isn’t stifled.

Now trading as X, it’s a very different place and a wide variety of views and opinions are allowed compared to the toxic environment it was previously, for example, for those holding GC views.

For me, Twitter has more advertising and junk, and less posts from the people I want to connect to (in my work field, not GC feminists and politics) so there is less motivation to post and less people to interact with.

I'm not planning to go anywhere.

If you look at this chart you will see that Twitter is one of the least used platforms, so the bigger question is why anyone signed up in the first place. https://www.statista.com/statistics/272014/global-social-networks-ranked-by-number-of-users/

It seems to be because lazy journalists, for whatever reason, used tweets as the basis for stories, even though the fact that it is such a minority platform, means it in no way reflects what are the important issues of the day.

So if your attraction to being on twitter was the possibility of being noticed by a journalist or whatever, wait and see if newspaper stories, and tv chat shows start referencing some other platform. (Many now do reference TikTok but I think they do that to try and make it look like they understand young people.)

So are you on social media to campaign, or to interact with like minded others.

Personally I think this distortion of how important twitter was is the reason the mainstream media started and continues to misrepresent the importance of trans ideology.

It may well be that if being influential is your main concern that meeting up with women locally and leafleting other women, or holding open mike sessions etc., might do more good. I wouldn't of course suggest anything that might lead to some sort of investigationg such as eye catching stickering.

Twitter may well turn out to be the rabbit hole that too many people disappeared down and finished being a cul de sac of infighting, unobserved by 90% of the population!
