Anyone else just kind of baffled as to what #maaaate is supposed to achieve?

I mean, I feel like it's come from a good place, for the MOL to announce this as a campaign while women are still being killed at a rate of around 2 a week just seems like turning up to a tsunami clear-up operation with a dustpan and brush.

christ on a bike

what a dick

Well these women know exactly how to help him reflect on his behaviour now. One word. Or doesn’t it have magic properties when a woman says it?

It's about as sensible as that suggestion after Sarah Everard's murder that if women felt threatened they should wait for a bus and get the driver to help them.

Sometimes I reckon that these people are just taking the piss and seeing what stupid idea they can come up with that people will swallow.

Maaate, sort out the Met.

Sort out the police full stop

I don't think this campaign is going to sort out men being sexist in a group. They do it to bond with each other . My hb said you don't know what men are like when women aren't around . When a woman comes into the room the dynamic changes . They have to mind their language and conversation more .

SidewaysOtter · 28/07/2023 12:06

On the face of it, it's a good thing: getting men to be on our side and use their position of friend to challenge sexism.

But it's just too insipid, there's too much tip-toeing around male sensitivities. We can't demand anything (no-one likes a shrill, demanding woman, amirite?!) and no-one wants to be seen to be laying the blame at the door of men because NAMALT.

Not all men are like that but almost all men are rubbish about pulling up their mates for shitty attitudes even if they don't agree themselves. That is still left to the women and it's time that men stepped up properly. Someone I know posted a rape "joke" on FB and it was so damned noticeable that it was the women who pulled him up on it. The men? Tumbleweed blew sliently through. Is there some kind of Bro Code that you don't criticise a friend if it was "just a joke" or something?

An apologetic "maaaate" just doesn't cut it and we shouldn't have to accept just a few crumbs of help on the basis that it "starts a conversation/raises awareness/is better than nothing".

Surely it's a good thing if it at least raises a bit of awareness. Personally I think pornography is fuelling a lot of the attitudes to women
