What about my identity? - new SEEN blog

Well done to the colleague that wrote this, you have summed up how I feel:

https://seen-network.uk/posts/2023-07-19-why-is-seen-important-to-me-vii/

Why should anyone (my employer or society at large) make me accept someone else's identity when doing so fundamentally undermines my identity?

There is no definition of woman that includes me and transwomen.

I cannot understand why the civil service is so hell bent on supporting the identity of a subset of colleagues whilst being so willing to throw my identity under the bus and threaten me with disciplinary if I step out of line.

Why SEEN is important to me (vii)

“I am not a woman because my personality happens to align with the stereotypical expectations that society places on me due to my sex, any more than I would not be a woman if my personality did not. And my personality, like that of everyone else I have ever met, is a mix of those traits that society ascribes to be feminine and masculine because stereotypes are nonsense.”

This.

A very succinctly put piece. And totally what I believe about myself and other women. How on earth did this become so ‘controversial’ a ‘viewpoint’. This is fact.

Tallisker · 21/07/2023 08:30

It's beyond ridiculous that people have to post anonymously to avoid being targeted at work. I questioned the use of gender rather than sex as a protected characteristic of the Equality Act (in EDI training!) and was told that gender is the more modern term. Then got loads of posts in the chat about the JLR thing and other 'proof' that gender is legally more important. And told to educate myself.

So these are normal every day colleagues, not rabid activists, but the narrative runs deep and sure that TWAW etc and I'm the one with the problem.

I'm another one who can't bring her whole self to work. When the majority of colleagues wear the Proud Trust lanyard (they of the dice game for children 🤬) I feel distinctly unsafe.

The LGBT group get to present to management on how to be good allies, how to use preferred to pronouns, push push push the agenda all the time, and although there are plenty of groups to support the other characteristics, they don't get the same airtime or slots to present to the department as a whole.

To be fair the Race group gets good exposure but they're not trying to take anything away from women so it's so very much less alarming.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 21/07/2023 08:37

That’s a corker

BobBobBobbing · 21/07/2023 08:46

Excellent piece!

The "I am a women because I feel like one" is really insulting. How the actual fuck could they know what it is like living in a female body? When more detail is provided it is all around stereotypes. I've spent my life fighting them and being told that is womanhood is so regressive. I dont understand why more people don't see that.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 21/07/2023 09:03

Good piece.

and reminds me that it's almost a month since I asked HR why sex was left out of the EDI section of the staff survey (but gender got 2: 1 identity and 1 reassignment). Time to prod for an answer.

Great article - and yet another one my BT Wi-Fi blocks. They really don't like us terfs. They are quick to remove the blocks when I report but it is so 🤯

Boiledbeetle · 21/07/2023 09:27

Succinct and great piece. I can't imagine how bad the atmosphere is at her place of work right now having to put up with this crap. It must be so incredibly frustrating and head banging on wall inducing.

flyingbuttress43 · 21/07/2023 09:33

This article sums up everything I have said for the last 10 years and will continue to say. I am so done with this trans bullshit. It's verbal poison.

Florissante · 21/07/2023 09:48

Well put.

KohlaParasaurus · 21/07/2023 10:24

There is no definition of woman that includes me and transwomen.

This. Furthermore, as a very ordinary woman I probably share more common ground with the average ordinary bloke than I do with any transwoman.

Borderlinehungry · 21/07/2023 13:38

Ex civil servant. Agree wholeheartedly.

Timefortea4 · 21/07/2023 14:36

I find it odd that colleagues in an impartial organisation can wear lanyards with flags on them that are so closely associated with the silencing of women, and of course actual violence against women.

Calls to punch women were cheered at Trans Pride. At what point will it be safe to challenge?

I'm another one who can't bring her whole self to work. When the majority of colleagues wear the Proud Trust lanyard“….

So these civil service colleagues wear a lanyard to advertise themselves as “trusted adults” for LGBT+ youth?

This is what the Proud Trust’s page says about “trusted adults”.
“Who is a ‘Trusted Adult’?The service has been developed and created for any adult who has a trusted relationship with a young person. This could be a parent or carer, a schoolteacher, sports coach, bus driver, hairdresser, shopkeeper or anyone who has regular interactions with a young person. If you feel there is something specific to your role or interactions with children and young people that isn’t covered in the resources, please do get in touch and let us know or use the web chat function to talk it through with one of our operators.”

I note that the Proud Trust is located in Manchester. Wasn’t there an LGBT youth charity which had a dodgy Director? Was that in Manchester or somewhere else?

What was the “JLR thing”?

FlirtsWithRhinos · 21/07/2023 20:28

Really well expressed. I will save it for when I need to make the same points.

Tallisker · 21/07/2023 21:59

The JLR thing

Thanks.

Presumably they’ve attended training which highlights that case but glosses over Forstater?
