Youtube suggested this for me today
(unless it was shared on here yesterday and I missed it but an ad tracking algo picked up - in which case apologies to the original sharer)

I thought it was an interesting slice of 20th century female cultural history.

Very much of its time in terms of what's ok for women socially (and I'm fairly sure the bloodless period animation would have left a few girls surprised when the real thing came), but also interesting to see how reassuring and matter-of-fact the whole thing was as well.

I remember being shown the 1970s version of this in the last year if primary school. It was very jolly and advised us not to go horse riding when we had our periods 🙄😂

Thank you for posting that. I loved it and was surprised by how clear it was.

I skipped through a bit and can’t be sure, but I think when explaining how useful keeping a calendar is, though she said it is good for planning ahead, there was no mention of, “If your period doesn’t come when expected, you could be pregnant”.
Is that right?

Motorina · 16/07/2023 21:19

I thought it was delightful.

No, no mention of the method by which the egg might be fertilised. (Magic? Eating the wrong sort of mushrooms?). And certainly no mention of unplanned pregnancy, pregnancy at all, or babies before the wedding day.

AnneWhittle · 16/07/2023 21:20

yes, very confusing on that point- and potentially worrying, if eggs might get fertilised randomly!

ScrollingLeaves · 16/07/2023 21:38

In its time it would have been shown to little girls just before puberty so they’d be ready, maybe age 10 on, but with no thought that they could be pregnant very young.

Here is a Kotex advertisement, also advertising the booklet mentioned in the film, “Very Personally Yours”.

born in 57 i love gloria blondell's voice! really soothing and typical of the tv of my youth.
i liked the vintage video thank you for sharing this, i would think a few people could benefit from some of the "common sense" hints given regarding eating well exercising and not slouching ;).

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 18/07/2023 20:56

the voice over is lovely

I rather enjoyed the 'just get on with it, you've got to live with this for the rest of your life' tone

how slim does the 'heavy' girl look by today's standards?!
