My two pennies worth is that she has always been a full on wing nut

Yep,nutty as squirrel shit.

JoanOgden · 08/07/2023 15:28

Ah @swallowedAfly I remember you from when you were on this board 10 (?) years ago! Really good to see you again.

swallowedAfly · 08/07/2023 18:00

Did you have a different username Joan? I see a few old faces on facebook but no idea whose who on here now.

Yes - over 10 years ago I think. I was very into it when the fwr board first opened and used to post way too much and spend far too much time on here till I got targeted by mras (now mutated into tras having started out as plain old incels) and plastered over the internet with people trying to dox me and had to have my entire posting history deleted in the end.

Nice that some people are still here.

swallowedAfly · 08/07/2023 18:01

And nice to be remembered Smile Is that vanity?

Has her husband ever commented publicly? It's a shame they don't emphasise more that homophobia and a rejecting reaction to his playing with feminine toys at a very young age that drove the whole thing and link that to the findings about the tavistock.

He (Tim Green) appeared in the 2012 BBC Three documentary (Transsexual Teen, Beauty Queen). He seems to be fully on-board with Jackie's transition.

Just with regard to Thailand, I believe it was a 6 month period between the law being passed (to raise the minimum age for vaginoplasty to 18), and Jackie's surgery took place in that period (a 16th birthday present). Possibly it had already been scheduled before the law passed.

One thing mentioned in the article: it says Susie Green abruptly "left" Mermaids. Jackie posted a video on YouTube responding to Posie Parker's video where she comments on Susie Green's TED talk, in which Jackie says that Susie was "fired" "for no reason". Jackie's video has since been deleted.

GeraniumKF · 08/07/2023 18:15

Apologies: "a 6 month period between the law being passed …" and it taking effect, rather than 3 months.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/07/2023 18:18

I'm pretty sure it's been acknowledged elsewhere that it wasn't her choice.

Oh dear. This is why I stopped posting on this board. I end up sharing too much and then feeling mortified. Might request post deletions.

Don't feel bad! You remind me of myself a bit with the over sharing. Its anonymous and people appreciate and relate to stuff in here.

I also think personal stories is how we work out the pattern. You can't get impirical research on homophobic parents because they won't admit it. So we really on spotting similarity in people's stories xx

Bluebellbike · 08/07/2023 18:36

JulieHoney · 08/07/2023 11:42

No, it mentions in the article J is the eldest child.

The 3 younger ones are boys, including twins.

WallaceinAnderland · 08/07/2023 18:39

@swallowedAfly I think I remember you too. Didn't we used to call you SAF before the @ button was invented?

I've name changed several times.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/07/2023 18:45

Thats a rather long article to simply say " misery loves company "

Sgs own Ted talk says all you need to know. Dad couldn't cope with effeminate behaviour. SG threw out the barbies instead of the homophobic husband. Then medicsllg and urgically transed away the gay.

How thats seen as brave and stunning ill never know.

Yep. I'd still respond to SAF in person to this day lol. I remember meet ups and conferences where I was just naturally Saf even in person. Nice to see you.

I think what's really sad is that many TW who have gone through all the surgery still look like men. I don't want to say anything about specific individuals because their mental wellbeing is at risk or they would have been able to accept reality but it's so very clear that you can't turn a man into a woman.

I think SG did do what she thought was best. I truly do. But she was completely wrong in every single thing she did related to gender. I think she must be pretty old fashioned herself as regards gender roles, not just her husband. She's not able to understand science and evidence bases. I guess when you get someone who is a good self promoter, stuck in a very bygone era re: men and women, does not understand science, has a gay son and put them in a culture which has shut down all critical thinking and is looking to pretend to be following an equality agenda whilst really strongly protecting a male power base, this was bound to happen.

On your first paragraph. My thoughts too. Even with puberty suppression, early opposite sex hormones and surgery. I suspect it is even more obvious in real life.

mauvish · 09/07/2023 19:53

@swallowedAfly , please don't feel bad in any way about your post. It was a brave and honest one, and I'm sure you are speaking for many other people who feel and felt just the same as you.

potniatheron · 10/07/2023 09:30

@swallowedAfly thank you for your wonderfully insightful posts.

I'm bisexual and suffered severe MH problems as a teen in the 90s which manifested in anorexia, self harm and eventually substance addiction. I hated my body. I felt so uncomfortable in it. I do get chills at the thought that had I been born a little later I could well have ended up going down this pathway. And that's why I feel so strongly I think.

potniatheron · 10/07/2023 09:37

I would also like to add that although I've been following developments with Mermaids closely, I hadn't fully absorbed this fact:

"it emerged that Green, a mother-of-four who has no known formal medical training, had been referring children to GIDS even when the children's own GPs had repeatedly refused to do so."

I didn't realise that SG had actually been forcing children onto this dangerous pathway against the explicit decisions of medical professionals. That, to me is truly chilling and I wonder if it falls foul of any laws?

You wouldn’t remember me because I only used to lurk on FWR back in the day, until I came out as a Spartacus, and I’ve name-changed roughly eleventy-billion times, but I learned so much from you and Dittany (and one or two others)…as a WC woman who didn’t get to go to university and still doesn’t profess to understand swathes of feminist theory, you really helped me think about what “feminism” means to me. In my youth I was a choosy-choice “sex work is work” libfem whose first engagement with anything trans was “be kind”, and it was the forensic, articulate minds on here, including yours, who helped me understand just how regressive and misogynistic the ideology is.

The story of how one woman came to have so much power over the medical pathways of so many children who aren't her own is one of many horrifying things that have happened under the guise of 'be kind'.

This time in history will be looked back on with horror.

swallowedAfly · 11/07/2023 05:17

Thank you soundthesirens. We had a really good mix of minds on here - I learnt loads.

I have been thinking back on discussions we had on whether women could be right wing and feminist for example (with right wing women commenting or at least a couple) a lot in recent years because of the broad but single issue alliances being thrown together by fighting back against very basic women’s rights being threatened by this ideology.

we were very ahead of the curve and aware of what we felt was coming and has been proven to be correct and then some.

if I have time I’m going to hang around and see what it’s like on here now. I have lurked a bit at times and been pleased to see it attracts women with really helpful/interesting presumably professional understanding of eg legal procedure and process to learn from. Glad you came out of lurking and got stuck in 👍

Terrifying isn't it. Not only because she has no medical or psychiatric training, but also because, and I mean thing is in the nicest way, from reading her words and watching videos, she doesn't appear to be particularly proficient either intellectually or in the way of empathy.

Nothing wrong with that ofc, I'm not exactly Brain of Britain myself. But then, I haven't inexplicably been given power over the entire future lives of children and young people.

The fault must lie with those at the Tavi who allowed her words to hold so much sway. I feel sure it must go against some sort of medical law or ethical standard!

Tallisker · 11/07/2023 12:20

Ugh. I remember reading about one doctor 'salivating' at the Dutch protocol (I think - I know you'll correct me if I'm wrong). I also think this was the doctor in the US that prescribed blockers for JG as a child.

A reminder that Polly Carmichael is STILL head of GIDS. Several clinicians told Hannah Barnes in Time to Think that colleagues had admonished “You made Polly cry!” when they raised concerns.

Mermaids BECAME Susie Green and GIDS BECAME Polly Carmichael. And that’s probably a big part of why we’re in this godawful mess today.
