Could we just do a mass sit in for Women's Rights outside Westminster?

I'm just wondering why with all the grass roots groups that have sprung up (Standing for Women, Fair Play for Women, Sex Matters, Women's Rights Network) etc we can't just do a massive protest march and then have a sit down outside Westminster for a few hours?

Or has there been one and it just didn't get reported in the news?

I went to a massive one once many years ago (against the criminal justice bill) - will politicians sit up and take notice if women just go on strike for a day from whatever and make it clear that our sex based rights matter and they'd better do something about protecting them asap.

Count me in

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 03/07/2023 20:16

I'll be there. Can we have lots of women only loos though? Actual women that is, of course.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/07/2023 20:17

I’m in!
add tea and biccies to the planning list
and some gazebos for us peris

I'd love this. And can there be a Big Screen and women who can't be there in person can check in via Facetime and Zoom and send a message. I could get a few women together in my kitchen around a lap top or PC, and we'd have something to say to the government and the opposition.

I read something about somewhere the women of one country did actually strike. Not just paid workers but unpaid home workers and the country shut down. Maybe it was in the book invisible women? I genuinely think we should do that!

Unfortunately I'm a single parent caring for a disabled child. I can't strike or go on marches but I agree they need to be happening!

EdithStourton · 03/07/2023 20:23

This sounds like an excellent idea.

My rage level is currently up to 11 and this might let me blow off some steam.

FriendofJoanne · 03/07/2023 20:31

@NeverTrustAPoliceman Hmmm maybe we'll have to take she wees? Or use bottles like the dirty protest the TRAs did - but we'll demonstrate our far superior social skills and take our waste home to be disposed of rather than dumping it...

Icelandic women went on strike.

The shops sold out of hotdogs apparently. Wonder whether Icelandic men can cook better now….

I think women from both Switzerland and Iceland have protested about the gender (sex!) pay gap. Swiss women did a national scream for one minute, to include VAWG. Both countries have a large pay gap and they downed tools at the specific time in the year when the pay gap came into effect.

I quite fancy the National Scream. I can scream very loudly. Wasn’t the loudest crowd noise ever recorded at a under 18s Netball final? I’m sure that noise level would get through the walls of the House of Parliament.

FriendofJoanne · 03/07/2023 20:45

@PriOn1 that's amazing - 90% of the women of Iceland joined the strike!

I'm not a great one for demos but would make an exception for this one. Please put Lianne in charge of the security.

Ha! Should have RTFT. 🤦‍♀️

ThisTimeIts · 03/07/2023 21:18

What about one near King Charles?

He will have lots of security so women will be safe.

TitsInAbsentia · 03/07/2023 21:40

I can't be the only one whose brain read it as "shit in outside westminster".....

Sadly I fear we'd be dismissed as silly little women or have a load of masked up oddbods trying to trash the party...

Forwarder · 03/07/2023 21:54

You can bet it would be ignored by BBC and ITV.

Could have demos at the devolved talking shops on the same day. Plus our Irish sisters in Dublin.

Thelnebriati · 03/07/2023 22:00

Can it be for women's rights and safeguarding? This might actually be the right time to do it; Recent Events have been polarising and many people seem to be quietly taking a step back because of them. I wish Recent Events had happened before the debate on 'sex is biology'.

heartofglass23 · 03/07/2023 22:05

I'd do it.

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 03/07/2023 22:08

But count me in for a mass sit in or actual women’s March in London!

RavingStone · 04/07/2023 09:38

I like the idea of sit in. Make it like one huge peaceful picnic. That way any trustafarians who want to disrupt it will stand out and look a bit silly.

RavingStone · 04/07/2023 09:40

A woman's strike for equal pay or anything wouldn't work now because trans ideology has been so successful at turning women against each other. I see it as the patriarchy grabbing back everything it thinks women took from it.

SirChenjins · 04/07/2023 09:42

I probably wouldn’t be able to get there in person but would definitely log in on screen - unless we could organise one for the Scottish Parliament as well, in which case I’d be there in person

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 04/07/2023 09:50

I've never done anything even vaguely political in my sad old life (a few stickers in recent years if that counts?) but I would absolutely be up for this.
