Anyone watching this on ITV just now? Fascinating so far. Surprised to see Sajid Javid in it!

Just pressed record. Didn't know this was on.

Have already had Susie Green mentioning suicide. Sigh. I hope it is going to be balanced.

anythinginapinch · 25/06/2023 22:32

Not sure I can stand this.

mightymam · 25/06/2023 22:39

Loving Sue but I'm surprised no one else shared her concerns and were vocal about it. Unless that's yet to come in the programme.

I wonder what Suzie has to say about her sudden departure from Mermaids...

Shocked to hear CBeebies had Polly Carmichael on one of their shows!!! Wtf?!!

I thought they did a good job.
Was the Taylor report ever released?

IwantToRetire · 25/06/2023 23:58

Thanks for the reminder.

I totally forgot it was today. I assume it will be on catch up.

sashh · 26/06/2023 03:48

Just watched it.

I was talking at the screen, Poor Libby, listing all the things they want in life but will never have, children, old age...

And did anyone else notice Libby is a mini me of mum?

SallyLockheart · 26/06/2023 06:14

I noticed Libby was a mini me of mum

I've read time to think so know already much of this history of the the Tavistock so this felt a bit restrained but nevertheless a good introduction to what was happening there

far too lightweight on the effects of puberty blockers on non physical aspects of pubertal development- as no one really knows how it effects brain development and decision making that going through puberty creates

So Libby - by avoiding puberty - will possibly gets stuck at a mini mum stage

Sausagenbacon · 26/06/2023 06:49

And did anyone else notice Libby is a mini me of mum?
Yes.

One of the many reasons I now do not have a. BBC TV license.

careful but good review by the Guardian. Welcoming future programmes and documentaries to further expand the discussion

"uninterrogated Susie Green" was a good comment!

I liked this bit

When every other kind of mental or physical health protocol and treatment is subject to constant rigorous scrutiny, debate and amendment in the face of new research, what makes transness a special case? On and on we could go and, hopefully, will. There is so much still to listen to and to learn.

Signalbox · 26/06/2023 08:19

I've only watched the first 3 minutes and already mum of "transgirl" child is saying "how are you going to wear your hair" and "you haven't got your earrings in".

Is there a parent of a "trans" child who doesn't give the game away that it's all about stereotypes within the first 5 minutes of being interviewed?

That's a clip from a programme called I am Leo about a girl who wants to be a boy, which was shown on CBBC in 2014, coincidentally just before the massive increase in referrals to GIDS started.

Newsround Blog is a twitter account which documents this stuff.

Haven't watched it but I did read Lucy M's review. She was obviously trying very hard to be equivocal, but reading between the lines I think she at least advocates caution and is possibly more GC than that. Wonder what it's like being her in the Guardian offices.

NotBadConsidering · 26/06/2023 11:59

I can’t watch it, but are they really only using a 15 year old as evidence it’s “helped”? Let’s see if that 15 year old still think it’s “helped” when they’re old enough to appreciate what their body can’t do like other 25 year olds…

Yes, hair was exactly the same, style was the same, mannerisms the same.

Poor Libby.

I think Lucy‘s view came across very clearly, though she was careful to express it in moderate language.

Luckily for her, I bet she works from home most of the time.

Good point, yes, she may well do!

Floisme · 26/06/2023 12:32

I've not watched it yet but I'm pleased to see Lucy Mangan reaching out to grasp the nettle. I think I remember her saying she'd moved to Norfolk so maybe the Guardian office isn't an issue for her.

What's happened to the full Cass report by the way, wasn't it due to come out early this year? (Apologies if that's covered in the programme).

miri1985 · 26/06/2023 13:17

I'm only 15 mins in so far but Suzie Green has just said that Mermaids pushed GIDS to adopt the Dutch protocol, in the charity commission case didn't Mermaids say they had no medical expertise as the reason that nobody claimed to have read the Cass report. How can your organisation be completely medically unaware and also pushing the NHS to adopt a risky drug regime for children

endofthelinefinally · 26/06/2023 13:30

Poor Libby was the typical example of everything being about the hairstyle, the clothes, the make up and jewellery. Just like mum.
Hearing Libby talk about growing up, having children, was really heart breaking.
Libby is likely to develop osteoporosis, heart disease, high risk of stroke, infertility, no sexual function.
Libby may well die before Libby's parents.
Transitioning children is a huge experiment and we are only just beginning to see the health problems.
Adult males who transition by wearing a costume don't have the same health risks they are so determined to inflict on children.
