'the vast majority of flashers and peeping Toms never face charges. University undergraduate Libby, 21, was raped and murdered by serial sex offender Pawel Relowicz on a night out with pals.
The sick killer had a string of previous convictions for spying on women, indecent exposure and performing sex acts in public.
...
'The new figures, which we uncovered through Freedom of Information requests, show only 10% of non-contact sex crimes reported to London’s Metropolitan Police between 2021 and 2022 led to charges.'

Libby Squire's mum blasts police's lack of action to crack down on peeping Toms

Libby Squire, who was raped and murdered by serial sex offender Pawel Relowicz, would still be alive today had the offender been stopped earlier, her mother Lisa said

Ach, sorry, I've made an error - only 10% reported lead to charges. Will ask MN to amend.

Title should be 'only 10% reported lead to charges'.

I've never even reported it. I didn't think it would be taken at all seriously.

Signalbox · 18/06/2023 19:39

I bet the reporting of sex offending is even lower than the conviction rate though. I've been groped so many times by strangers in my life and only ever reported sexual harassment on one occasion and then the response was so appalling I wouldn't bother again. Complete waste of time.

ArabeIIaScott · 18/06/2023 21:04

Yes, of course. Most offences won't be reported.

I work in the field and in my geographical area, indecent exposure is taken very seriously. However, if people aren’t prepared to report it, not much can be done.

ArabeIIaScott · 18/06/2023 23:34

It's good to hear it's taken seriously. Do you know what the rate is for securing convictions?

I suspect if it's as low as 10%, that will be a large part of why most don't bother to report.

I have no idea I am afraid, as I deal with people post- conviction.

ArabeIIaScott · 19/06/2023 10:34

Thanks anyway. Would be really interested to hear your thoughts on this, if you're able to share? How can we get this taken more seriously? Can offenders be rehabilitated?

I have many questions ...

Do women know it will be taken seriously? No one reports flashers where I live. We're likely to be told 'what do you expect us to do?'

There was a serious incident on my street several years ago and the police treated him as the victim - because she fought back and injured him. There was an internal investigation, none of us have been told the outcome.
