I've just seen on Katherine Deves twitter that Reem Alsalem is under attack for supporting the rights of women and girls.

In the meantime for anyone who is on twitter or facebook you can let AWID know that they dont speak for feminists

https://www.facebook.com/AWIDWomensRights/posts/pfbid0n7Wz1fHR9WcvFKaMsJL8vQuTiVEQ1EDJYforzbrmNFBMF7eE9u31tdAniGqZaF5Ul

Globally AWID is hugely influential as it is seen to be one of the few women's groups prioritising women's voices from the Southern hemisphere, and wonder if a letter signed by predominantly western feminists will hold much sway politically.

@Wellies54 it looks like Google have blocked this presumably based on complaints. Do you know if it is available elsewhere. Or if anyone has a copy of the content let alone the signatures.

The most marginalised and vulnerable™ demonstrating their marginalisation and vulnerability again there Angry

800 organisations? That’s fantastic!

Chersfrozenface · 26/06/2023 08:48

The Sex Matters post says "Alsalem is speaking at the 53rd session of the council in Geneva on 22nd and 23rd June, and the International Council of Women plans to present the letter during today’s session."

Is there an update on this?

ArabeIIaScott · 26/06/2023 09:26

'the letter is endorsed by the representatives of nearly 800 civil society organisations, groups and national platforms, as well as more than 2,600 individuals, from 60 states. '

Brilliant.

I appreciate the strong support by many #women and feminist organizations to the mandate and the work that I do.

Not sure what happened but at least the letter and other activities have caught the attention of some:

This Wednesday, an interactive discussion in the council about gender identity will take place, with a report presented by the special rapporteur on the matter, Victor Madrigal-Borloz. A rare clash between United Nations human rights experts recently occurred on the issue when Reem Alsalem, the special rapporteur on violence against women criticised gender identity activists for “silencing” women’s rights protesters, causing Madrigal-Borloz and rights groups to react.
