Women being erased in Canada, again

They can't even bring themselves to call us women, or cis women. We are just "cisgender individuals". Transwomen get to be "trans feminine", though...

"trans feminine folks looking to use the fitting rooms were told that they would have to wait until all the cisgender individuals had cleared the rooms"

It's odd that for people who want to be women, they really, really hate women

What mangled language. How unnecessary. Except for the very rare person, everyone knows what is a woman and what is a man.

Flickersy · 17/06/2023 04:34

Who is "they"?

Given this tweet is in response to trans women not being allowed in fitting rooms with women, I think it's rather clear "they" are NOT "erasing women" and women are probably doing just fine in Canada, at least in La Senza's changing rooms.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 17/06/2023 04:38

I'm Canadian. According to this La Senza rejected the trans women. How is this erasing women? They legit told them no.

toomanytrees · 17/06/2023 05:37

Despite the clumsy wording, good for la Senza moving in the right direction to protect the privacy and dignity of women and girls. The new policy probably resulted because of complaints from their female customers and employees. Women are finding their voices and they are being heard. This is the opposite of erasure.

renthead · 17/06/2023 05:59

Well done to La Senza.

I'm in Canada and I received an email today for a pelvic floor workshop for "perinatal people". That terminology is so bad that I actually laughed out loud!

OP, maybe have a look into what you're posting about before posting! 🙄

Brokendaughter · 17/06/2023 06:04

So, they don't want to use the womens changing room UNLESS real women are in it at the same time?

What do they do if it's quiet & nobody else is shopping?
Wait until other customers turn up?

BCBird · 17/06/2023 06:09

Tbink using protect probably got transgender 'women's annoyed but good for La Senza exercising common sense

The “they” in the OP’s post is the trans campaign group using the wording “cisgender individuals” to refer to women trying on undergarments in the La Senza changing rooms instead of calling them women.

What’s interesting is that the trans campaign group assumed that there were no transmen or women who identify as non binary in the changing room. Kind of an exclusionary assumption.

LoobiJee · 17/06/2023 07:44

I had a scroll through the campaign group’s twitter feed.

Interestingly the group for transwomen is called Strong Hearts while the group for transmen is called Tender Hearts. The group for transwomen aged 40+ / 50+ is called Young Hearts. The group for under 12s and their caregivers is called Big Hearts.

Seems they back tracked.

The Corporate office has issued a statement welcoming males into the change rooms anytime they like.

By the way, is ‘panties’ a generally used word for underpants or does it refer to sexy knickers only, or is it a word used by males to describe underpants. When I see males describing their ‘panties’ it feels like fetishistic speak but wondered if that was because I have never used the term for my own ‘undies’. Is it country specific?

I think in the US “pants” means trousers, whereas “panties” means knickers? So that might explain it? Dunno about Canada though.

Panties is the normal everyday word in the US for what we'd call women's pants/knickers in the UK. The word gives me the ick but it's not a fetishistic term. Not sure about Canada but I'd presume it's likely to be the same.

Who didn't see this coming?

Helleofabore · 17/06/2023 09:38

Thanks for the heads up about the term ‘panties’. I find the term conjures up old fashioned briefs with frills on the back to me, or uncomfortable bits of lace and nothing else.

Obviously, it is my own issue to deal with. Thanks for the explanations.

It’s not just you. I find “panties” a really weird term. I mean, who even says that? But I’m in the UK not the US.

BCBird · 17/06/2023 10:43

Well no La Senza underwear for me now. Oh well.

I'm not talking about La Senza. I'm talking about the reporting of it by a pro-trans group.

That tweet only says corporate is ‘looking into the issue’. Has there been something definitive?

La Senza would be mad to backtrack - the ratio in the Twitter thread linked in the OP was entirely supportive of the original position.
