An addition to pronouns

First time I've received an email that not only had pronouns listed, but the phonetic way of pronouncing the person's name.

Tbh, probably of more use* than the pronouns.

*Except the name in this case was Calum.

I don't believe you. This is a false accusation. A foul calumny. Grin

Redshoeblueshoe · 16/06/2023 16:25

😂😂

WhiteFire · 16/06/2023 16:27

But it could be Ca-lum or Cal-um.

I have a friend called Sharon, but pronounced Share -ron.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 16/06/2023 16:35

I’ve seen that too, madness

That is true, he highlighted the second version. (KAL-uhm 😅) Though I can't say the extremely marginal, split second variation in the sound of my name would be top of my priority list 😁

My reply to the first email I received with pronouns was "Dear he/him"

YinYogi · 16/06/2023 16:38

So if you called him Ca-Lum it would be literal violence…right?

If you have to speak to him, please over-exaggerate the pronunciation, almost shouting the KAL and sticking a definite aitch sound into the "uhm" - like uh-hum!!! Then act hurt when he pulls you up on it, because he will, and say you were only following his instructions.

I've seen this for several years and I find it very useful. I work in a v international company where many people have non-phonetic names that are unfamiliar.

So if you are fixing to meet with Eildidh or Huang or Rui, it is useful to know how to pronounce their name before you meet.

Redshoeblueshoe · 16/06/2023 17:19

Toe-knee 🚔🚓

Walkacrossthesand · 16/06/2023 17:23

Anyone remember the 'Tony Blackburn' song from the 80s? 'Knee toe knee black toe knee Blackburn' ! 😂

Igneococcus · 16/06/2023 17:24

My name (first and last) hasn't been pronounced correctly in 30 years. I'm very tempted to do this, if I could figure out how to do the phonetic spelling.

I agree. I have a blank spot with names which is very embarrassing. Even names like Aiofe which I’ve seen and heard many times, I forget how to pronounce it.

I used a face to face service last week, the lady had an African name, which I promptly forgot how to say. Her follow up email had the phonetic spelling so when I then had to phone and ask to speak to her I did so correctly.

Not sure how Sam would write theirs though.

Magpiecomplex · 16/06/2023 17:31

The best one I've seen is a phonetic pronunciation of Ann...

Pastlast · 16/06/2023 17:31

I find this way more useful than pronouns. And I’ve seen a lot of my Irish and Welsh colleagues do this and find it helpful. I can see if everyone does it as a solidarity thing that makes it more comfortable.

for work purposes I could not care less what sex you are but being able to go into a meeting and say hi x and pronounce the name correctly is great!

😀 how did that go?

HidingInAForest · 16/06/2023 17:32

Our managers have added an even stranger one.

It's finger spelling their name at the end.

Now surely if you were deaf and receiving our emails directly in work you'd be able to read still...

Magpiecomplex · 16/06/2023 17:37

@Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis
'An'
😆

ha ha, they deserved that.

Rightsraptor · 16/06/2023 17:40

If you have the phonetic alphabet available on your device it'd be really helpful to spell your name out. Not many people would have the slightest idea how to read it, but what larks!

I agrée. This isn't like pronouns it's useful and makes sense. Having everyone do it is funny for Sam and Ann but means others don't have decide if their name is foreign or unusual enough for others to struggle!
