Questions about Twitter

Having discovered the joys of Twitter from following this board, I now have some newbie questions and would be grateful for help.

1 often people post photos etc but when it's a letter the writing is too small for me to read. If you click on it the picture is even smaller. Does anyone know how to make it bigger? If I click on the ... top right of my screen to zoom that doesn't work.

2 If you retweet, where does it pop up?!

3 Is it possible to do the opposite of "like"? ie can you signal "this is rubbish" or "I don't like this".

4 Say someone has said hey look at this and they have reposted someone else's tweet which they are saying is awful. If you like it does that mean you like the awful thing or you are agreeing with the person saying it is awful?!

Many thanks for any answers 😀.

To be fair, I hardly get time to look at it. I assume when I retweet something it goes to my profile, and people following me (which are not many) can read it. I’d rather use the browser instead of the app. It’s more friendly I think.

Just don't ask anybody at Garden Court Chambers.

2 - if you retweet something, it shows to all your followers as well.
3 - No

4 - Not necessarily, as sometimes people like a tweet in order to place mark and easily find again and for example read an article or blog link.

1 Click on it and use your fingers to expand. Or download and do the same.
2 It pops up in the feed of your followers, and on your own feed. (So if someone looks at your feed, it'll be there),
3 Some posts - they seem to be posts expected by algorithms to be controversial - have a sort of down vote option, it's like a fat arrow. Most posts don't show this.
4 It means you agree with the person saying it's awful.

3 The only way to do that is by quote tweeting it with your comment disagreeing with it at the top.

Chamomileteaplease · 10/06/2023 08:36

Thank you everyone, that really is very helpful.

I access it on my laptop and can't see a way to download. I can copy the image and expand it but it's a bit of a faff. I am surprised they don't make it easier for people; I can't be the only one who would need a magnifying glass🙂.

I've only been on it a few months I'm still fairly in the dark as to how it works. I have no idea if I'm doing things right or committing some awful Twitter etiquette faux pas.

It's the same for any pictures posted on this app for me. If I click on them they appear smaller and I can't expand them! It just has to remain a mystery to me

Chamomileteaplease · 10/06/2023 12:13

@Boiledbeetle 😆I'm the same, it's terrifying isn't it? Would hate to cause an unintentional pile-on!

@mangoontoast yes you have reminded me it is the same on Mumsnet too. How can this fault still be in existence in 2023? Or is it us??😆

To enlarge an image I have to use control plus +, but its often such poor resolution its unreadable anyway. I wish people would post the text, many people use screen readers which can't read an image file.

Boiledbeetle · 10/06/2023 12:53

@Chamomileteaplease I know what you mean. I type things out as responses, then think NOPE don't want to get caught up in that particular shit show and delete and just like/retweet instead.

Quote tweets confuse me as they seem to be good and bad depending on the opinions you have of the tweet being quote tweeted. My brain just gets confused as to the 'rules'.

I hate sending send things out as a brand new tweet, rather than a reply, into the ether with no idea where its going, who's going to see it, if the person I've @d at will ever see it. Is it going to gets 8 views and then disappear down a twitter plughole somewhere?

I do think the fact that you can see how many people have seen a tweet as well as how many have liked it or retweeted it is not a good thing. I like Mumsnet you post and if it doesn't get deleted you get to assume that everyone who reads your posts who doesn't interact with it probably likes it.

But the worst thing is it all seems so messy and illogical. there seems to be no sense to what it throws up for you to look at. I'm sure the algorithms do what they think is best, and I could probably go into my settings and personalise things more, but it all seems so random.

Anyway, seems like a good opportunity to leave my twitter thingy whatsit lying around.

@Boiledbeetle yes I tell myself it will all become clear in time 😀

Boiledbeetle · 10/06/2023 22:23

See I'm not sure which is worse, that it won't ever make sense, or that it will!

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 10/06/2023 22:26

Re 3- you can give a negative reply of course, unless they've blocked replies (then you can still quote tweet though). Also you might have noticed comments about "the ratio" or "being ratioed" - that refers to the number of replies compared to likes. If a tweet has fewer replies than Likes, that tends to mean it's pretty popular (as more people take a second to Like, than bother to reply). But if it has loads MORE replies than Likes, presumably the replies are mostly negative (otherwise they would probably have Liked as well) - so if someone has 400 Replies but only 45 Likes, that would be a bad ratio! So negative replies can show something's unpopular in two ways - the actual reply content, and contributing to the ratio.

To make an image attached to a tweet bigger when you are using a laptop:

  1. select the image so that is all you see
  2. "right click" on the image and you should see a "pop up" list of things that you can do next
  3. select "open image in new tab" (NOT "open link in new tab")
  4. go to the new tab containing the image - it will be much bigger
  5. if you see either a little "magnifying glass" or a plus sign in a circle in the centre of the image, select that - now the image will be even bigger

Thank you for that! I've never been able to get the image bigger, until now!
